I voted for 4 more dinner/side plates but I would personally also get at least 4 fruit bowls, assuming they are like a normal cereal bowl size or just slightly smaller. Those would be good for things like cereal or normal smaller portions of stuff like chilli as well as prep work. I rarely eat out of a bowl but I still have 3-4 different sizes of smaller bowls just because they’re convenient.

I would wait on platters, serving bowls, etc just because they don’t really need to match, especially if you’re already going for the mismatched look. Those can be found at marshalls/homegoods for much much cheaper and I’ve even seen some kate spade ones there in the past.

MsGinkgo:  Are you planning on having a family? Half the plates are always dirty.

If not, a serving dish or two is probably the way to go.

We have a full double set of our every day stuff like plates, bowls, etc. (plus a bunch of extra plates that my in laws gave us) because we host Christmas dinner with about 10-15 people. You can always tuck away pieces you’re not using but you can’t magically produce dishes in your pattern, so more of the staple items are key, in my opinion. No one will notice if you don’t have matching serving dishes. We generally still wait until the dishwasher is full, but it’s nice not to have to run it all the time. Hope this helps!

MsGinkgo:  I would get two more place settings for now and a couple of serving pieces. 8 is enough that you aren’t washing dishes every two seconds for yourselves AND enough to entertain (except maybe huge family holidays). For our nice china I got everything except the bowls (so far! they are a dream…) because I know I hardly ever serve pasta or soup when I entertain – depending on your go-to meals that might change which bowls you want.

I would get either 2 more place settings or 4 more if you can swing it, just in case a plate breaks or you have more guests over, or have kids in the future like someone mentioned.

Then I would go for serving platters or a serving bowl. I registered for a set of 12 thinking it would be crazy to have 12 people over, but you know what was purchased first off my registry? Three sets of 4 place settings each. It seems like a lot but it’s so handy when some are dirty and sitting in the sink…lol.

MsGinkgo:  I just bought a set of Christmas dishes. I ordered 12 place settings. Yes, we won’t use all 12 often being just the two of us but with dishes in the wash or for family dinners (with DH’s kids, spouses and gkids included, we go from 2 ppl to 8 ppl in an instant), I do want to set a complete table. I have the same setup for our everyday dishes, 12 place settings. Same for cutlery and utensils. Granted, this kind of stuff gets me excited so I like to make sure I have plenty.

I vote for more plates and then smaller bowls (these all should stack well and be fairly compact in your cupboards). Those huge bowls are such a waste. Too big too serve a routine and useful purpose. Yes, they look nice but they seem to hold two cans of soup, half a box of cereal, etc.
