lilceeja124 :  I grew up with a very good friend by that name, knew one in hs and a child named that now. So not a LOT of people, but a few. Grew up in the north east and now live in the south east.

The first way is the only way I’ve heard it for a first name (and if it’s the way the majority would say it, then please go that way instead of setting your child up for a lifetime of “Actually, I pronounce it…”).

Also, I just watched a video with Mara Wilson (she was the little girl in Matilda and Mrs. Doubtfire and now she’s a writer) and she pronounces it the first way and I consider her the authority on all things Mara…just cause.

I’m from NJ and everyone here would pronounce it the second way as in Mara/marriage. But we do that will all names like that Daria, Mario, etc. they would all be As like in Marriage…

My daughter’s name is Meara! Pronounced more like the second way. Mear rhymes with near! Love it. She’s nearly 2! Great choice

yayhamlet :  that’s awesome! If you don’t mind my asking, where was your aunt from? Meara is an Irish name. My nearly 2 year old is called Meara! Never hear it! We say it like: Mear (rhymes with Near) ah

If you’re going for the first pronunciation, you could spell it Maura. I think that one is hard to mess up 🙂

I asked my husband and son. My husband and I both like the first. Our son liked the second.

OP- it’s complicated. I think it’s regional. Where are you? How do people in your area speak their words with short and long ‘a’ sounds?

I’ve never known a Mara, but I would read it mar- as in March then -uh.  I know a lady called Amara, And she pronounces it the way you described in the first choice. I think I would stick with what is pronounced most often where you live.

I like the second way better, but my instinct when reading it is to say it the first way.

Oh gosh! I’m Australian, so we obviously pronounce things a little differently.. I definitely would say Mara as Mar-rah (like car)..

If you were wanting it pronounced like the youtube clip.. I’d almost be tempted to add an ‘i’, and have it Maira – but then you’d get may-ra, which probably isn’t quite right either!

    Best of luck 🙂
