The struggle!!! I am in the market for a ruby ring. I originally started my hunt with a ruby being the spotlight. But then i stumbled upon a beautiful opal (which is my birthstone, and a stone I dont yet own) with a ruby and diamond halo. This ring is identical to one my mom has that was my grandma’s, only hers is a sapphire and diamond halo instead of ruby and diamond. So the sentimental value is there because of the similarities. BUT my mom knows I love that opal with sapphire and diamond halo, and I’m 90% sure I’ll end up inheriting it long down the road. So then I started thinking maybe I shouldn’t buy one so similar, and then I found the one with the ruby center – I’m so drawn to it and the art decor of the halo. Love it! I 100% cant decide. (Hello 1st world problems!) Which would you choose?

I love the art deco ruby!!! Its so sophisticated. I have to admit I’m biased though because I love almost anything art deco!

I love the ruby one. Not a huge fan of the opal one. It’s a little busy for my taste.

Love the ruby – and then you won’t have something so similar when you receive the other opal.

ArmyWifey8.23 : I like the opal center better because it’s more unique.

This is the best picture I have of my grandma’s ring. Note, I am in love with this ring. I have no guarantee I will receive it (3 other siblings and I’ve already received a few jewelry pieces of my grandma’s). So part of me says if I get the opal center ring, at least if I dont get my grandmas ring I’ll at least be reminded of her with the opal ring. The other part of me says if I do receive my grandma’s ring, I will no longer wear the new opal…. I’m completely overthinking this because both of these rings are a pretty penny.

I prefer the Ruby center. If you don’t inherit the opal ring, you can purchase another opal ring later. Personally I would go for the ruby, and also while I see the similarities between the two opal rings i agree with pp that the opal and ruby ring is a little busy, and to me the opal and sapphire ring is cleaner and more elegant. Just my $0.02

Love the feedback!I think I’m going with the ruby center… wish I could buy them both, but I cant! I will hold out hope for my grandmothers ring (MANY years down the road! 😁) and for now will go with the ruby. I think the other style is common enough where i could easily buy another of that style if need be.And heck if I never receive the opal ring, the ruby ring is still heirloom quality for my daughter. Thank you all for the input!

Opal is much too soft to be worn on a frequent basis. It has a rating of 5.5 on the Mohs scale. The ruby is an excellent choice; conundrum is a 9 on the Mohs scale.

The ruby is gorgeous! Can I ask where it is from?

ArmyWifey8.23 : I just bought a brooch (2 white Opals making the body of the beetle, 2 pink tourmalines for the eyes, gold legs) and it’s so cute! So I am a bit drawn to the Opal ring. But that halo on the ruby ring is really elegant, I can’t look away. Get that one 🙂

I love the opal ring, but opal is also my birthstone so I’m a bit biased haha. I think I recognize it, is if from brilliant earth? I think with the chance of inheriting your grandmothers ring I’d go with the second choice. Even if you don’t inherit it you may find yourself comparing the two or noticing things you like more or less about them.

Ruby ruby! What about an opal necklace later on? Necklaces are slightly more protected. You would still have to take care of it but a necklace would definitely be easier and safer for an opal. Opals are so beautiful!
