I think the save the date is a great way to show your personality and do something fun, however it also sets the tone for your wedding.  I think it depends on the type of wedding you’re having. The drawing would be a little casual for the wedding I’m throwing, but maybe it’s perfect for yours.

I voted for your son’s drawing. I think it’s beyond precious. I would love to receive that in the mail!

As a mom, I’d think it was super cute. As a guest, I’d think it was cheesy. Mabye you could somehow incorporate it into your STDs? Like, have the image shrunken and included on/in the formal ones to select guests that you know would enjoy it, or “get it”? Just my .02.

I would use this and then on the back maybe do a more formal STD photo and request.

I don’t have any kids, so maybe that sways my view.

I probably wouldn’t put it on my fridge, but it’s okay as a STD. I love all the wedding picture Save-The-Date Cards on my fridge, so those are my favorite. I actually keep them for a couple of years on the fridge.

I love your son’s drawing, and  I think it would be a neat way for your son to contribute to the wedding.  However, I’m a kindergarten teacher so I’m a little biased towards children’s artwork.

I like Genuine513’s idea of using the drawing as the front and putting something a bit more formal on the back.

Aw. The drawing! It’s just a save the date — it doesn’t have to be formal (IMO).

I would LOVE to receive a save the date like this. It shows, among other things, how excited your son is!

I have kids, and I guess it depends on who you are sending them to.  You know your guests better than anyone.  It also depends on the tone that you are setting for your wedding.  If you are having a ubber kid friendly, lots of kid activities, and very casual wedding then those are adorable and send them out.  If you are having anything more formal than that, then I would go for the letterpress.

If I received the drawing as a STD I would definitely keep it long after the wedding. A letterpress card would probably be discarded once the actual invitation arrived. I vote for the drawing, especially as you said it’s a kids welcome event.

I would go with the letterpress, but maybe incorporate your kids drawings in another way at the wedding?
