As a guest, which venue would you prefer?
Option A: No drive, not as nice
Option B: Drive, nicer
Option A: 1 min walk from ceremony site. Expensive hotel next door. Although not the fanciest location (with a high ceiling impossible to decorate), it has a beautiful view of our old college green for indoor cocktail hour with potential outdoor terrace space. Dinner is in very large empty hall (will need to be decorated) that might not have the best accoustics. Floor is “eh” (the white/grey speckled type). Private spaces for afterparty a short walk nearby (where we can bring in our own alcohol) or we could go to a bar. ETA: Can have a nearby hotel room with a babysitter for kids here. About a third of our friends have kids under age 7.
Option B: Private club 20 mins drive from ceremony site. Hotels 10-20 minutes away. Possibility to rent (expensive) condos on location (although likely still a walk from club). Club overall is classic club, nice decorations (some rustic elements). Cocktail hour is part inside (“eh” room), part outside on terrace (beautiful view overlooking the golf course). Dinner would be in nicely decorated room, much smaller than the first. (Might seem a bit crowded while the first might seem a little empty.) Afterparty would need to be at a hotel/bar a drive from the location.
Would your answer be different as the host? Other details: Food is probably similar quality at both places. We can hold onto the cocktail space for both locations during the reception. We’re not sure if the budget can stretch to fit a bus for option B. We’d like to provide it, but can’t afford to have a trips from hotel to ceremony to venue to hotels, so would need to figure out how to possibly cut that down. First option is $1-2k cheaper than the first (on a rough $25k budget, where we pay over half and can afford it but don’t need to spend unnecessarily). Prior to the wedding, option A is going to undergo some construction (blocking up windows on one wall, and creating windows on the opposite wall) in response to construction on a nearby building. If we go with Option B, the groom & his guys can go golfing there the day or two before. Dates for option B also match up for a Sunday wedding on the three day weekend that coincides with our rough 4th year anniversary of dating. We might consider a super low key BBQ cookout on the day before in that case.
