Ok, so fiance and I are not sure what we want in terms of the wedding cake, well, for the guests that is. I decided long ago I would forgo the wedding cake in order to; a) save money and b) because I don’t like the taste of wedding cake all that much, they’re just really pretty to look at.
So, the thing is, I’ve always imagined having a wedding cake so I’m not sure which alternative to go with. Also, I don’t want to be super trendy, and on the other hand there isn’t anything wrong with alternative desserts. People always talk about the cupcakes at someone’s wedding with delight, not with their noses in the air. Having a pretty wedding cake with all the trimmings is off the table, I’m only deciding between the above options.
Lastly, I’d like to share with you the bundt cake thing because it’s not obvious what I mean by that. On each of the 16 tables there will be a glass cake stand. On the cake stand will be 4 small bundt cakes of two flavor varieties: vanilla with glaze drizzle and chocolate with powdered sugar. There would be berries and flowers around them and around the cake stand so it would make a lovely centerpiece. I would anticipate people splitting them because they are the perfect size for that. Also, I have a small army of women who are volunteering to bake.
Ok, you’re turn to talk….

The bundt cakes sound like a really good idea, but I’d worry that people wouldn’t eat them — they might not know they were supposed to. But if you could communicate that to them I thin it would be nice.

@peachacid: Yes, I have read this before, I think it was here on the bee. I’d put some clever little card alongside. Thank you for your comments!

@JoolyBee: First off, HELLO fellow RVAer!!
I dig the bundt cake ideas. I agree with PP about the confusion, though! Maybe have a cute sign explaining? (What a sweet couple we make! Celebrate with your own cake! JK)
Cupcakes are fun but I think you may run the risk of decorations getting sloppy since there have to be so many made. That would happen for me, at least!
Doesn’t sound like you’re too interested in the assortment, so I won’t go there.
Would you consider having a teeeeny tiny pretty cake for cutting?? It’s such a good tradition!

When I eat cake I LOVE frosting, so bundt cakes don’t thrill me… but I love other pastries.
But I like the idea of cake centrepieces a lot!

The reasons why I chose the cupcakes:
1. They still have the classic cake feeling, with a modern touch
2. They dont have to be cut/served… people can choose what flavor they like
3. You can make them more decorative or custom to your theme than the other options
4. In my opinion, bundt cake doesn’t taste that great
5. Cupcakes are yummy!
It sounds like you have an idea of what you really want.. like how you brought up how people talk about cupcakes with delight. I’m a little more of a traditional girl though so just go with what you really want and I’m sure it’ll be a hit!

@Mars62312: Holla! Where did you get married??? So many great venues around here and in VA in general…
So, back to topic. I like the dessert assortment, and we went to a wedding where there was one, and it was great. We really enjoyed it…and then I got paranoid about being a copycat.
We are definitely doing a small, traditional cake for cutting, but might have it home made so I will still find it tasty. Also, SO is getting a Krispy Kream cake for himself 🙂 You know about Kripsy Kream on Broad St.!

@mrsrazon: I’m traditonal too, that’s my struggle here for sure. Thank you for the cup cake break down. Glad to see here that truthfully people aren’t digging the bundt cakes…they would look pretty, but I wouldn’t want people to not enjoy their dessert!
Still undecided though…gonna watch this poll some more 😉

@Mars62312: oh, that’s wonderful! My fiance actually used to work there as a waiter. We are good friends with one of the former chefs (who JUST got engaged himself!) My uncle also had his reception there.
