@mrspinesol:  I think cloudiness happens if a stone is porous, so water or other stuff gets deep inside. so once it clouds, then cleaning it will never undo that. and sometimes it can take years for the cloudiness to happen. I know that cheap CZ clouds over time, and I’ve definitely seen that with some of my costume jewelry that I wear a lot.

so I wonder: are all sapphires porous? or is it just the cheap ones, such as the ones from Zales?

@mrsmay07:  I have a beautiful, lab created white sapphire from Helzbergs. It’s 8mm (2 carats?) and gorgeous. It was about $100. I saw a pic of it on another bee and had to have it.

@mrspinesol:  oh! it makes sense that scratches could cause clouding, and I can now see that perhaps a cheap lab made sapphire might be more prone to that than an expensive one.

I don’t think a lab sapphire would be more prone to scratches or clouding than a natural sapphire, lab sapphires are sapphires grown in a lab, not cz.

I just snapped this picture at my desk to show you how cloudy my sapphire is compared to the CZs I also wear in my ears. The one on the left if the CZ and the one on the right is the sapphire. Both are worn in the same ear and both were cleaned yesterday (using jewelry cleaner and a little brush the store gave me). You can clearly see how cloudy the sapphire is, even is this crappy quality picture.

I’m not trying to sway you away from a white sapphire…just trying to show you the quality you get from stores such as Zales. I would suggest getting a very high quality sapphire if you decide to go that route. Hope this helps 🙂

Cost will depend on the Carat size..I went to Shane Co. and picked out an Ice Blue one for my ring! 1.24c was just over 1k -I looked at the white ones too they looked stunning.

I have a white sapphire right hand ring. I got it on clearance at Zales for around $30. It’s lab created which is a plus for me since I’m not a fan of mining. It’s internally flawless. It was originally on a sterling setting and I reset it in 14 karat gold. I get more compliments on it than I do my ering.

Try out gemselect.com. I was considering purchasing a white sapphire there but ended up getting a couple of london topaz stones.

Hi here’s my sapphire ;).  It was purchased as a white sapphire but I quickly discovered it sometimes in certain lighting looks blue..what a lovely suprise! Now I just love it more.
