I’m in the same boat. I have to bring my mom and sister. I want to invite Future Mother-In-Law since she has no daughters and I’m thinking of inviting my BFF since she’s my other maid of honor but I don’t want it to get too crowded.

The 1st dress shop I went to was an impromptu thing and I was just with my mom. The 2nd time was at David’s Bridal to see a specific dress and I was with my sister and my mom met us there. The 3rd time – which was when I purchased the dress – was with a close family friend whose kids were in my wedding [and her mother in law who was in town]. I didn’t bring my mom because she was very loud about disliking my choices in David’s Bridal and it pissed me off. After I decided on the dress I called my mom and she came to the shop to see it and give the yes or no. Although my sister is my best friend she was only in high school at the time and had her stuff going on and so she wasn’t there. Also, nobody even me, thought i would get a dress at that third shop.

For my fittings both my mom and sister were there. Since I got a custom dress that I didn’t even try on before purchasing the 1st fitting felt like the real “first time I put my dress on.”

Only my mom and my sister. I would have taken a few friends but we just moved and no one lives close enough.

I live in China and my family and bridesmaids live in Australia, so I couldn’t really go dress shopping with any of the people I’m meant to. I ended up doing one day of dress shopping with another girlfriend who’s also engaged, and getting married eight months before me. It totally took the pressure off. I made sure the consultants were more focused on her, leaving me free to browse and kind of immerse myself in all the different styles, silhouettes etc without any pressure or influence.

I ended up ordering my dress from overseas – something I always figured would happen – but did a lot of back-and-forth emailing of photos, pros and cons discussions with my BMs, closest girlfriends, my mum and my grandmother before I pulled the trigger.

By the way, you may want to check with the bridal salons you’re going to on what their policy is with bringing along males. I know another bee had a difficult time when she took her father along to see her dress. I would imagine a lot of brides and wedding dress stores would be uncomfortable with having men around, giving there are girls about the place in often poorly-fitted dresses.

I brought my mom the first time and then my mom and Future Mother-In-Law the 2nd time. I didn’t want to bring anyone else because I knew that their opinions would sway me and I didn’t want that.

The first time I went with one of my bridesmaids, I found the dress that I wanted during this time. So then a couple days later I brought my mom to show her some of the dresses, and without tell her which one I wanted, she picked that one! I think too many people can turn into too many opinions, then all of a sudden you don’t know left from right, and you dont know what to do!

@g_g_dgjb:  Most people just bring their closest femal family and/or friends. I went with just my Maid/Matron of Honor when I happened to find my dress. The day I actually purchased it I had my sister and Maid/Matron of Honor with me.

I would just take your mom and sister or your parents and your sister. Bridal salons are small, the fitting areas are tiny, add huge gowns being tried on by people with 3 guests with them.

ETA: Any of my trips to bridal shops to either try dresses on for myself or pick out the Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses, nothing annoyed me more then seeing people having 5 or more people with them taking up all of the very limited seating for guests and even blocking off the fitting area.

I went with my sister and a friend the first time. The second time I went with my sister and my mom. Then I went with FI’s mom. The next few times I went by myself. Last time, I went with my aunt. No big crowds of people, and I kept the opinionated ones (my mom and my aunt) away from each other, lol.
