I think Romney did well because everyone expected him to come off as completely disconnected and robotic, as he has at everything else he’s appeared at before this debate. If the bar is so low that “appears to be a real person” is the standard, then sure, Romney knocked it out of the park.

To be honest, Obama looked like he was totally winging it and seemed very ill-prepared. He also seemed distracted too. Romney was obviously the stronger candidate (strictly going off of last night’s debate) but his arguments did not seem genuine, more like “rehearsed”.

Obama just barely. I would think Romney if it weren’t for the fact that so mnay of his greatest moments were actually lies, prevarications, or half-truths. The real loser was Jim Lehrer, who was a huge disappointment as a moderator.

I think Romney did better, but I won’t be voting for him no matter what he says. He has already demonstrated that he’ll say anything, so his words hold no water for me.

Obama was too polite. He should have mentioned all of Romney’s lies, the 47% comment, the fact that Massachusetts was 47/50 in job growth with Romney as governor, and the fact that Obamacare is essentially the same thing as Romneycare.

@iRun2004:  The two points I came away with were – Romney must hate green energy and making each state responsible for health care?!?

EDIT: Was anyone else sick of hearing their “who I met on the campaign trail” stories?

@Woodstock:  Actually, the fact checkers I’ve read say the 5 trillion issue is real, though the actualy amount is $4.8. For me, Romney’s insistence that there was no 5 trillion dollars to account for was his weakest moment since he stood his ground so much but was lying.

@mrsSonthebeach:  Ugh, yes. At one point I actually yelled out “Shit, Jim! GET IT TOGETHER!” My husband was laughing so hard at me.

@hisgoosiegirl:  The buzzer is an awesome idea!

I thought the mediator needed a whistl and needed to control the event better. The whole thing was over all dissapointing. Obama seemed worn, Romney and his stupid smirk.

I thought Romney completely controlled the debate (yes – I got sucked in to watching it).  Which I was at least glad about because I’d much prefer him over Obama (although I wish the GOP could have given us a better candidate).  Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s going to matter come November but maybe I’ll be pleasently surprised.

@hisgoosiegirl:  “I was really surprised how poorly I thought Obama came across. He usually seems so “on”.”

He’s really good reading from a teleprompter but when he has to speak of the cuff, he isn’t nearly as impressive.

@Woodstock:  I’ve seen that as well.

My understanding from the reading I’ve done, is that the more accurate statement would have been:  Gov Romney’s plan is to put in place a law that cuts $5 trillion spread out over 10 years, which is $500 billion per year.  He proposes paying for that by eliminating deductions and loopholes. I can’t figure out where he comes up with sufficient deductions/loopholes to make it to that $500 billion per year, and Gov Romney hasn’t told us.

Is that how you guys read the fact check too? I know $5 trillion was the easiest number and probably designed to counteract any attacks by Romney re the deficit. But I think Obama would have been served just as well to go with the full truth.

    @iRun2004:  Yes, pretty much.

Romney’s tax rate cut creates a revenue shortfall of 5 trillion over 10 years. He says he will adjuct for that loss in revenue by cutting loopholes, but also that closing those loopholes won’t result in a net tax increase on the middle class, but there simply aren’t enough loopholes and deduction that don’t affect the middle class to make that possible.

I am voting for Obama, but he just didn’t do that well.  🙁

But I clearly heard Romney say he will cut funding to PBS, and I say DON’T FIRE BIG BIRD!
