@jumpthegun: I am in the process of doing this now but not with jasmine. The guy I am working with I had several visions. I knew that i wanted a mermaid. So I took a few different pics of dresses and told him exactly what I want whether I wanted the bodice from one dress the lacing or beading from another dress and the skirt from another he would work it out. Finally I have a visual drawn up of what I wanted and he confirmed every step of the way he has been extremely patient with my needs and wants if there were any misunderstandings he would rely what he thought and I would correct or agree. Try to be specific if not voice what you want. ie satin sweetheart neckline mermaid with corset or button back. etc hope this helps

I am working with a dressmaker/corsetiere to design my own dress, although it is based on another dress. You have to have a very clear idea in your head of what you want and (even if it’s not the greatest work of art) it really does help to sketch out your ideas.

Try on dresses similar to what you want to have made (even if it is just one feature that’s the same, i.e. a similar neckline or skirt) to make sure you’re making the right choice.

See fabric swatches before you confirm the final design. Wobbles are even worse when you’ve designed it!

@jumpthegun: I’m using a relatively local dressmaker. Is that an option? Mine was surprisingly cheap (I have a nine piece outfit largely in pure silk of a high quality and it’s coming to £1500, which would have been at least £3000 from a bridal store). I know she starts at abuot £200-300 for simpler dresses in cheaper materials.

That also includes all the alterations up to the day.

Little tweaks are easy to do, but if you want something substantially different go local.

@jumpthegun: I am getting the dress made, but have not yet begun the process.  The dressmaker suggested I go to some wedding shops to try on dresses, to get acquainted with shapes, necklines and materials.  Hope this helps!
