The doc wants to put me on it but hubby and I aren’t quite ready yet. Who can tell me about it? What are the side effects? Who has it worked for and how long did it take? Does it simply speed up the process of getting pregnant? DH is terrified of a multiple births but I am not sure the chances of that are increased for us anyway since we are older. I’m not sure what to think of medicine. Part of me wants to keep trying naturally and part of me wants to try speeding up the process.

Prettysmile40: I took Clomid for four months, I was having really long cycles and had no idea when I was ovulating. It did make me ovulate but I didn’t get pregnant on any cycles of Clomid. I didn’t really notice any side effects.
I think it helps you to know when you ovulate so you can time BDing better.

Clomid helps you ovulate. If your Dr. is putting you on clomid they have probably done tests that confirm that some of your normal cycles you are not ovulating. Just my opinion from what has been told to me. On clomid, I had some side effects like being hot and some mild headaches. I have been on it for two months. First month just took the pills. Second month had an ultrasound and a progesterone test to confirm ovulation. I did ovulate my second month. I am in the TWW now of month 2

bloomingflower: I would think the doc would tell me that they found that but maybe not. I should probably check in with them at some point.

Prettysmile40: even if you are already ovulating, I believe they might use clomid to help you ovulate “stronger” or “better” eggs. Was this your OB/GYN or an RE? You will probably have better luck working with an RE since they should be much more knowledgable than a regular OB/GYN.

kes18: It was an RE. DH has been against it but we will see what transpires in the months ahead.

It helps ovulation by block FSH receptors so that your body naturally produces more. It sped up my ovulation from like day 30 to day 18 once I got the right dosage. Femera does the same thing, but in some different sort of way. Can’t remember anymire, it’s been 3 years since I did oral meds. It probably about the most least evasive thing you can do as far as fertility treatments go. Personally, at your age (if I remember correctly, you’re 40 right?), and after trying this long alreayd on your own I’d give it a go. It’s just 5 days of pills and then you wait. If you’re worried about multiples, you can go get a u/s to see how many you have at some point.

pinkshoes: Yes, I am 42. I had a fibroid/polyp that could’ve prevented pregnancy removed last week so we are hoping that things will happen now. DH hasn’t been keen on the idea but maybe he will warm up to it once he sees that we aren’t getting preggo on our own. Definately worried about multiples but what can you do?

Prettysmile40:
What are the side effects? They are different for everyone. You can read the typical side effects in the link bloomingflower: posted. For me, I get hot flashes and really emotional the following week. I also get ovarian cysts and Clomid increases the amount of eggs I produce and therefore increases the cysts I get.
Who has it worked for and how long did it take? I’m 7 months into fertility treatments. I’ve done 2 rounds of clomid (In November and in January). I had to take a month off after the November cycle due to the cysts. The January cycle didn’t work for me.
Does it simply speed up the process of getting pregnant? It encourages your ovaries to produce more/better eggs and therefore increases the chances of having a good pregnancy.

I ovulate naturally around CD17-18. Clomid maybe bumped up my ovualtion by like a day, if that. My Dr. put me on it so that I’d ovulate more than one egg per cycle, increasing our chances. A vaginal ultrasound confirmed that I was developing at least 2 mature follicles at a time. He told us that an average couple with no twin history has about a 3% chance of twins, and with clomid, he told me it bumped our chances up to 7%. We did 3 cycles of Clomid with no luck.
As for side effects, the main one was feeling hot at night. I took my pill in the evening to avoid side effects during the day. I was also a bit moody and extra emotional at times, but I don’t know if that was related to the clomid or just myself being extremely frustrated with TTC.

MissCountryGirl727: Sorry to hear that Clomid didnt work for you. My doc gave the same odds for multiples. They run in my family to begin with (my sister miscarried twins) so I hate to tell DH but there is a chance of them even without using Clomid. I hope you get a BFP soon. Keep us posted. It is a tough, emotional journey for sure.
