Although it is getting easier to have your name changed as a result of a legal marriage (even if not necessarily recognized in your state), a commitment ceremony will not be enough.  However, you could still go through your state’s regular procedures for a name change other than as a result of marriage.  Typically, it’s not even that hard; you could probably get forms from your courthouse or find them online.

It depends on your state. My friend changed her name here in AZ, and she basically just had to set a court date, appear before a judge, and state why she wanted to change her name (she’d just married her wife). She said she was really scared the judge would say no (they have the right to do so, unfortunately), but there was absolutely no problem. 🙂

My partner and I were legally married in California 8-15-2008. I look our marriage license into the DMV and they changed it on my license. Then I went into social security with my drivers license and my marriage license and they changed my name. With my new drivers license and social security card I was able to change my name with school, work, credit cards, the bank, etc.

Destination Wedding and I got married in Iowa last October and it was part of the process. Once we returned to TN I had to change it with Social Security (no problem) but the DMV is still fighting me on it.

We are getting legally married in MA, but we still haven’t decided on the name thing. Chances are we will be LastName-LastName.

Eh, who knows what well do lol, it’s up to her

That’s great! What did you end up having to do? Is there a reason you decided to do it before the wedding?

Yes, FW already changed in name legally in VA. It was just a matter of mailing in the right form with a certified money order. We did it way ahead of the wedding because we wanted to get all the legal documents (will, power of attorney etc) done before the wedding so we would be protected on the very day we’re married.

Congrats LKdurham!!  My wife (wife, heehee!!) just got married this past Saturday in Chapel Hill.  I hope your plans are coming together – enjoy it!  It goes fast 🙂  I’m glad you asked this question – I’d like to change my last name to hers but we’re moving out of the country on May 1 and need our passports so, no name change yet.  Good luck to you and congrats again!
