My dream honeymoon would’ve been travelling from new Zealand to Europe for six weeks.  However planning a wedding and paying for it ourselves made this too hard. We settled on Hawaii. It still cost us $12 k. We will do Europe some day soon.

Okay I definitely understand being disappointed that you can’t take your dream honeymoon, but being “mortified” that you can’t pay cash for a lavish trip to the Maldives? Huh?

Plan the trip you can afford. Plan on going to the Maldives for an anniversary and start setting aside money for it. You’ll even appreciate it more the longer you dream about it.

I think a lot people can’t afford their IDEAL honeymoon. I would have loved to go to an all inclusive in Hawaii or take a really luxurious caribbean cruise. Instead we took a 4 day, pretty cheap carnival cruise and had a blast! I’m always recommending cruises for honeymoons because I think you get so much bang for your buck and I know after I planned my wedding I didn’t want to plan anything else even if it was a vacation. Cruises were ideal for me, just get on the boat and go.

Mortified seems like a gross exaggeration.

Just go on a vacation that you CAN afford to pay cash for. Simple.

This is a weird first/second post. Coming across a little sketchy. Like the start of an MLM pitch or something lol.

I’m also confused by the word “mortified” in your post, as I feel like it’s fairly normal for people not not have the funds readily available for an extravagant “dream” honeymoon. Weddings are expensive, and a lot of people pay for their own weddings these days. Plus, other life things like buying a home take priority when starting out a life together.

Like many people, we are paying for our own wedding and keeping it very small. We have a fund we are putting money in to pay for both our wedding and our honeymoon, and we’re happy finding somewhere to honeymoon that’s enjoyable, but not crazy expensive. We have a budget for what we can afford and we’ll be happy with wherever that budget takes us!

jellybellynelly :  Agreed, I’m also getting a sales-pitchy vibe from this, especially after the OP’s follow-up comment. I’m waiting for it to lead into “if you’d be willing to give up XYZ from your everyday life to afford your DREAM honeymoon, have I got a deal for you!” tongue-out

petitjordan :  Oh totally! It makes complete sense to bust your ass with a second job so you can go to the Maldives for two weeks! Tell me more; where do I sign up?!?

I guess I could switch from real champagne to sparkling wine? I mean, it will be a struggle, but I could try…
