I’m a hygienist so no dental anxiety for me, but I see a lot of pts with it. If you hate the scraping sound.. bring an ipod. If you don’t like your dentist/ hygienist ask for a different one (or go to a different office). I know your hygienist already tells you but…I started out being a non flosser and hating the dentist to (going to hygiene school and starting ) flossing and actually liking the dentist. Good luck with your appt!

I LOVE the dentist. I mean, I really hate the sounds and stuff, but the amazing clean feeling at the end!!

Oh, not to mention the biggest pain relief I ever got in my life was getting my impacted wisdom teeth out. I dream good dreams about how great that surgery felt because the impaction was so bad.

I really think a lot depends on your dentist. I’ve seen dentists who made my stomach turn just sitting in the office, I got that anxious. SO’s mom is my dentist now and I’m actually very comfortable with her! (Despite the fact that she and I have a sort of awkward relationship).

I’ve had to have TONS of dental work since I was a kid. I used to be really brave about it, but I’ve noticed that my bravery has gone down as I’ve gotten older. now, whenever I have to get a crown done or anyhing else that involves hours of drilling, I take a xanax. seriously, it is a godsend.

Oh good lord me. I have the worst teeth ever. No matter how much I brush, floss, mouthwash, buy the specific electric toothbrush and use the specific toothpaste my dentist tells me to, I always cavities. Always. No matter what.  Dental visits have been horribly painful and depressing my entire life. Every time I need a filling (which is every time I have a checkup), they fail to numb me. Even if they give me multiple shots, I’m numb up to my eyeballs and can’t feel my tongue, the tooth is not numb. I’ve needed to be given oxygen twice at the dentist after the horrible pain from getting a filling.

Anyway. I hate the dentist, and yes I have full blown anxiety attacks every 6 months for my cleaning.

I frickety hate the dentist!  I have horrible TMJ, but I recently found a private practice- a super expensive dentist that does sedation- and I couldn’t be happier with him.  I don’t care how much it costs= I have anxiety over it- and lots of pain with my jaw problems, and had LOTS of horrible dental experiences – so it is worth it to me.

@hannarose I have considered it actually. And I definitely demanded general anesthesia when I had my wisdom teeth out.

@jennylynn13 Me too! The cleanings aren’t the problem, it’s the depressing news every time.

I had the worst dentist ever from the age of 10 to 18.  As a result I didn’t return to the dentist for 10 years.  Gross I know.  When my own child had cavities I decided it was time we both go to the dentist.
I was very honest with the dentist about why it had been ten years and my fear.  Because it had been so long, I needed a lot of additional work (scaling and two fillings)  The dentist was awesome about it though.  She was very detailed with me when she explained the numbing process and the appointments.  She suggested I schedule for a Friday when there was only one dentist in the office (making the office quieter).  She also prescribed valium and suggested that I take one an hour before bed and one an hour before the appointment.  Helpped loads.

I no longer hate the dentist, but I do still require some assistance in getting to sleep the night before an appointment.

I’m terrified of the dentist. For any work they have to put me to sleep or I have horrible anxiety attacks D=
