Governor Quinn signed a bill legalizing civil unions for gay and lesbian couples in the state of Illinois today! This establishes statewide laws to provide the equivalent of state-level spousal rights to same sex couples (more than 650 spousal benefits and protections).
“If you enter a civil union, you can now visit your loved one in the hospital to make medical decisions and not be turned away. You can take time off to care for your partner and not lose your job,” Attorney General Lisa Madigan said. “You can build and protect your family.
“This legislation represents a giant step toward equality.”
The law will take effect on June 1.
It’s about time!

Yay! I am in Illinois and I am ecstatic we have done this. I will be even more happy when the rest of the states follow suit.

That’s fantastic! Now, if we can just get the rest of the country to follow suit.

It strikes me as so odd that there are still states that don’t allow it. Gay marriage has been legal here for six or seven years. It’s not something that ever crosses my mind anymore. A lot of wedding venues have pictures displayed of same sex couples.
