I couldn’t exactly put this in either the “ceremony” or “reception” category so I put it here.
About a week ago we began talking as we’re in the midst of a serious family issue right now but during one of our usual daily calls about 3 days ago, my sis finally said “Well now J, we’re looking at less than a year until NEXT summer right? Well I understand you are not going to literally plan anything until the ring is firmly planted and that is cool. But we’ve got to get it all down NOW. Because sis, as soon as it’s planted you’re going to have to fly into “find the venue” mode.”
Then I got a lecture on how 2010 summer brides have already been descending and swooping down on choice venues and dates and that I’d have to join the feeding frenzy and get in there, and get that date.
I had felt amazingly well about everything until that call. and while my ideas are pretty good, my sis is the most amazing sounding board and also an amazing design enthusiast having owned two fantastic dress boutiques and has had parties at her home (very large, as elegant and even larger as most wedding receptions and of course tented as well). She is far more into design than I am.
So we began planning sessions to take the pressure off of me, and make everything flow well yet reflect my taste, style and the kind of venue I want.
We first settled the kind of venue I wanted and then we made adjustments so that our style we create for the ceremony and reception WILL FIT ANY venue I pick! Then sis and I as homework for the next call, scoured wedding mags and sites and then looked at what’s being done vs. what has not been done. She always leans towards what hasn’t been done or is a huge trend. Since I want an outdoor venue, we worked it every angle and popped in some interesting and I have to say, pieces that I have not seen used in quite a while. Go sis go!
We covered in the last few days everything from revamping color scheme to even bridesmaids dresses (she is now rethinking the lbd…oh no! Rethink the little black dress? And this coming from the matron of honor?) Colorscheme has now been tweaked and even the branding of the wedding (her use for theme) but we can do just so much of it and not take it ever too far.
Our last call was taking theme throughout without whacking guests over the head with it far too much as we’ve all seen sadly happen. We created basic themes based on the favorite venues and we’ll zero in on it when it’s all decided.
So with just a little help and without at all the need for any wedding consultant (hell she’s thrown more and probably bigger parties than a seasoned consultant) we have DIY’d the basic details all WITHOUT the venue and date. But hive, IT’S DONE! And i was die hard about not changing colorscheme but after we tweaked the palette, she is right. Yes I admit it, somebody else was right.
I won’t spill the beans too early and keep some of the main ideas under our hats, but will instead let loose as time progresses of some of the DIY projects I’m going to do. She’s also stoked that we’re having an intimate wedding too!!
Who else isn’t using a wedding planner? We’ll have a day of or somebody we’ll hire to carry all the things out for the day but we don’t need one.
I love my sis. I can’t wait to see her next weekend and we’re scouring more books. This girl needs her own damn show! I swear, the “Masters of Reception” need to step aside!
