Does anyone know the going rate for bartenders these days and who would pay for the bartender (bride’s side or groom’s)? Our reception will likely be in our church hall and the grooms side has offered to pay for the alcohol. Should we assume they’re supposed to pay for the bartender, too?

If the groom’s side is paying for the alcohol, it sounds reasonable to me that it would include the bartenders. I’m sure it depends on what part of the country you live in, but here in Wisconsin I’m paying $75 per bartender for the whole night. If you’ve already found your alcohol provider, you should ask them what kind of bartending arrangements are. Maybe the bartender is free?

Our venue was $150 per bartender for the night. They required we have 2, but they also let us bring our own in so we grabbed friends of friends and paid them $100 each! Some places require you have licensed bartenders

I also would assume that the groom’s family will handle this. If they have offered to pay for the alcohol I think they will also arrange the serving.

Bartenders that I have researched have a per hour fee, usually, ranging from $100-200 an hour. Some will require that you have two bartenders if you have higher number of guests. Also, make sure that the bartender that you hire have their own insurance (your venue may require that they provide their own insurance).
You should clarify with them – if they will pay for the alcohol (the actually bottles and such), bartender, and tip.
