I found out dress costs before asking people to be my flower girl or bridesmaids, so when I asked them I told them they had to pay for their dress and it would cost X amount of dollars, that way there would be no misunderstanding down the road.  In the end the Flower girl dress I chose wasnt available in the sizes we needed and we had to change to a slightly more expensive dress so I paid for their sashes and they bought the dresses.

Normally the parents of the flower girl pay for the dress, the same as the bridesmaids do.

Ask them the same way that you do of the bridesmaids.

It would be polite to make the Mom feel included so I would show her a couple of pics of tutus that would work for you and let her choose which one she wants to purchase. Tell her you can”t wait to see her daughter in the outfit, so “please let me know when you have it, so I can come over and see her”.

Maybe you could just subtly bring up the topic by saying something to the mom along the lines of “We should get together and check out some dresses for flowergirl. Why don’t you let me know what time fits into your schedule and whats stores fit in your budget?”

I made a tutu for our flowergirl and got her basket etc… her mom is going to find her some complementing leggings and a shirt to match the colors, but we did not do anything fancy…

If you want fancy and DO NOT want to pay then you need to send examples of what you expect and the color you want and then accept the fact that you have no further say in the dress..

Otherwise you probably should buy the dress you want yourself…

When i was little I was a flower girl and had to wear a peach dress… That is all the bride cared about… so it worked out well for my mom cuz we could buy a dress we could afford.

My Flower Girl is my daughter, so I paid.  lol.  But traditionally, I have experienced it both ways.  I’ve paid before (if I get to pick the dress) and the Bride’s paid before (when she picks the dress).

As a mom of a little girl that has been a Flower Girl a few times, I must say that I have NO issue paying for the dress….but it really means a lot if a bride takes my opinion into consideration simply because a lot of Flower Girl dresses are horrendously itchy/scratchy/uncomfortable to a small child (and non-moms don’t always realize the red flags).

The parents of the flower girl pay. This is why you ask them is their daughter can hold the role. I just emailed my SIL (Flower Girls Mom) with a photo and link to how she can order. She ordered and all was well 🙂

In my situation, one of my bridesmaids (my future sister in law) is the mother of our flower girl. I’m already asking her to buy her own bridesmaids dress, so I think I’d feel bad asking her to pay additionally for the flower girl dress (AND her son will be our ring bearer!). In this case, I think I may just offer to buy the flower girl dress. I don’t want to inundate the family with a lot of costs for our wedding (including hotel room, gift, etc).

@rachelb44:  i had the same thing… the mother of my flower girl was a bridesmaid, so we bought the flower girl dress/tights/shoes/basket/hairpiece for her….

We ordered it all online from a Chinese warehouse-type place we found after googling “flower girl dresses,” and it was perfect (and comfortable by all reports from the little girl!) and totally came in under budget….

I bought the flower girl dress ( 20 bucks at target) and will also buy the cardigan and little shoes. My bridesmaid is her mom and the dress is expensive so I really don’t want her to pay for much more as being a bridesmaid is totally expensive.
