sarfin914 :  We are gonna have 2 ceremonies. Here is the US first , it will be by a judge (civil). Later on for a religious second ceremony at my SO’s country, it will be his parish priest.

Mine is a family friend. He used to be a priest but now he’s a child psychologist. I’m having a secular ceremony though with no mention of God or anything religious

sarfin914 :  We asked my husband’s dad to marry us.  It was very meaningful and husband nearly cried, which is atypical for sure.  He was not a legal officiant so we had a quick courthouse thing a couple of days before to get the paperwork out of the way – the guy we hired for that was…. interesting.  And very kind.  But mostly interesting.  It definitely didn’t suit us to be married by a stranger though.

Originally my uncle, who is a pastor, was going to marry us but at the last minute had a family emergency and couldn’t so I found a pastor online and he was great.

My uncle, who is a minister (he baptized me as a baby too, so there was a nice full circle feel to it).

I do find the trend for online “ordinations” of friends/family a weird thing. I get that these people mean a lot to the couples and it’s nice to involve them like that, but I wish there was more of an emphasis on it being a legal endorsement than an “ordination.” Having watched my mom spend years earning her masters degree in divinity and putting so much work and time and self into her path to being ordained – while juggling a young family at the same time – it’s always rubbed me the wrong way to use the same term for someone who just submitted a bit of paperwork. /soapbox

I am having my best friends dad, who I am very close with to officiate the wedding.

My father is amazing, and I asked him first (mostly to be polite) because I knew he’d say no. He just wants to be the “father of the bride” and then asked him if he would be comfortable with me asking my best friends Dad and he loved the idea.

It was important to me to include him in the wedding in some way. And we are having a very small wedding.

In our state we did a self-uniting marriage so we married ourselves. 🙂
