Yum! I have never seen this at a wedding event, but I haven’t attended too many in areas of the country where bbq is big. I have been to a fancy fundraiser that actually did the whole hog. Everyone loved it.

this is exactly what were doing, delicious and if it is a little redneck well its kinda fitting then for us. the hog will be cut up first and then served so nobody will even see it anyways although im sure nobody at our wedding would care. were doing a huge array of side salads of different kinds as my moms best friend is a caterer, sweet! i think the thing that i’ve lived by planning my wedding is we do what we love and we want and thats all that matters.

first thing that comes to my mind is yuck. It doesnt seem very swanky to me. The only person I have known to do this is one of my exes who is Mexican and he told me when they have parties they do it all the time. Just another reason added to the list of why I didn’t think I could fit into his family. I just can’t handle that kind of thing.

It’s just a little too graphic for me.

Yep! I have hosted several pig roasts and they are AWESOME! So awesome, that’s what we are doing for our reception!

@Paigey:  So, I’m from NC and there is nothing we love more than a whole smoked pig.  This is actually one of the options at our wedding venue (Angus Barn in Raleigh)…their head chef is an iron chef (Walter Royal) and he is FAMOUS for his whole smoked pig!! We acutally had a pig pickin’ couples shower, so we opted to go the steak/shrimp/chicken route.  But we thought looong and hard about the pig.  They are just so damn good.  At our venue, though, the smoker is out back where the outdoor kitchen is, so the hog woudln’t necessarily be out where the guests were.  i think they also plate it really nice, instead of setting the pig out for people to either pick from or be served from.

Either way, I think this is a super fun option for a reception…one I would LOVE.  We also considered a low country boil for a rehearsal dinner, since we do low country boils all the time at the  beach in the summer.  We’re with you…totally wanted something laid back but still with a wedding feel, lots of fun, freaking delicious, and representative of the southerners we are!  can’t wait to see pics!! I can smell that pig now….

I think it’s a fantastic idea!! I would love to go to a hog roast, and that’s coming from a person who was a vegetarian for 12 years. I think it’s very important to know where your food comes from even if it’s a bit “graphic” and it’s somewhat hypocritical for meateaters to say that it looks disgusting…. But as a PP said, that is for another discussion.
