Sorry I haven’t been, but we’re thinking about going there for our honeymoon too, so…

I haven’t been to Phuket, but I have been to Bangkok, Chaing Rai, Golden Triangle, Koh Samui and Angkor Wat in Cambodia. My fiance and I absolutely loved Thailand and Cambodia and highly recommend it to anyone. There is a good tourist infrastructure so it’s easy to get around. We loved the food. It was fairly cheap. We didn’t have a problem with the language barrier. Everyone was really friendly and nice. We felt very safe. And it’s absoutely beautiful!!! If you want any more information, feel free to PM me, we have some great recommendations.

I would skip Phuket and instead look at Koh Phi Phi, which is an island nearby. While for your honeymoon I wouldn’t suggest staying in the main town, there are some nice hotels with their own beaches on different areas of the island. Most people that I’ve talked to who have been to Phuket said they would skip it in hindsight in favour of another location. I traveled fairly extensively in southern Thailand and would say there are nicer places!

ETA: my sister just got home from Thailand with her boyfriend tonight, and she said they would have skipped Phuket if they planned again – so that’s a prespective from a couple

I’ve been to Phuket, but as a child and I don’t think it made anything of an impression (I’m someone who remembers things from way back if they made an impression) so I wouldn’t say I recommend it.

Who are all these cool people who have been to THAILAND? Canadians? Australians? Brits? hahaha. The most exotic it gets for most Americans is Mexico haha so jealous!

I went to Phuket and I’d agree with previous posters who suggested skipping it… I found it dirty and a little creepy with the sex trade there. I wish we had spent more time in koh phi phi. We just did a day trip but I’d recommend staying there instead.

And I’m Canadian : )

I just had a thought – are you set on Thailand? Because there’s an absolutely awesome island in Vietnam called Phu Quoc. Visas are a bit more complicated because you have to apply in advance, but are easy to get. Lonely Planet and Travelfish have good starting/intro info!

hehe, I’m so immature the heading made me giggle. Is it pronounced, f*ck it? Anyways, I’m not, but it would be a pretty awesome place to see one day.

@love108:  Also Canadian 🙂 Southeast Asia is over-run with Canadians, Brits and Aussies. Didn’t meet many Americans!

@Cash000:  it would be awesome if it was pronounced like that haha – it’s actually more like Poo-ket. Although it makes Koh Phi Phi funnier – Ko Pee Pee!

@medbride:  Do you mind me asking, is it relatively cheap to fly from Canada? Now I want to go….. I wouldn’t mind being Canadian…. lol

@love108:  I’m living in Ohio but I’m originally from Kentucky! Americans definately travel! There are plenty of Americans that don’t do much international traveling but there are also lots of us that do! If it’s something you want to do, you just have to plan appropriately and you can make it happen. And I wouldn’t give it up for anything!

Hiya – I have been to Thailand and agree with the PP’s that when I go again I wouldn’t spend too much time in Phuket. It is worth it for the spectacle -Bangla road at night is crazy! And the day tours out to James Bond Island kayaking and the trip to Phi Phi Island and Maya Bay (think of the movie ‘The Beach’) are well worth it. We are getting married in a few weeks in Thailand in Koh Samui – and if you are honeymooning that is where I would recommend. It is far quieter and relaxed than Phuket. There are also a couple of lovely islands north of Koh Samui that you can travel to and stay in bunglaows – so lovely for a honeymoon! 🙂
