My Fiance did. He actually asked my whole immediate family (dad, mom, grandmother, and little brother). He’s a pretty traditional guy and I know it meant the world to my dad. My dad was actually so excited to have Fiance join the family, he gifted Fiance a rare antique gun as a present. It’s a bit of a joke in our house that the gun was my “dowry”

I didn’t want him to ask my dad because I didn’t want to feel like my parents’ feelings or opinions had anything to do with who I married. I absolutely do not feel like its two families joining together but more like two people making a commitment. I would’ve been irritated if he had asked my dad.

Darling Husband really wanted to ask my dad (something he’s always wanted to do) but he was scared my dad would tell my mum and then she would let it slip somehow to me. He wanted the proposal to be a complete surprise to me. The thought was there though.

My wonderful Fiance sat down and talked with my mom, and then called my dad (different city). I was out of the country at that time and had no clue. He was so sweet and respectful!

Fiance asked my mom and stepdad FOUR months before he asked me – they weren’t even outwardly excited when I told them, it was more like “Oh, finally!”

Permission? Not so much. Blessing? Yes. To me, there is a difference. We were going to get married but we also both have (mostly) wonderful relationships with out families so if they thought we shouldn’t get married yet, there was a good reason for it.

My SO asked my dad two weeks ago on our trip to Vietnam together which was perfect timing because my grandma & uncles that live in vietnam are very old school and would’ve made us sleep in different rooms the whole trip!!

We had been talking about marriage, so I asked him to speak to my dad. Not for permission, but more to “state his intentions.” It was important to me because at that point he was coming to live with me, and I wanted my parents to know that I was not just shacking up with anybody, but that he was sincere about getting married.

Mine did he called and told my mom I put a diamond in your mother’s ring and then she started crying in a good way. Dad overheard it before mom handed over the phone and was happy. They both gave their blessing.
