Usually you get china so that you can use it for dinner parties, holidays, family gatherings, or even just nice family meals. Every time I went to my grandma’s house for Thanksgiving, we would eat off her fine china and it made the meal feel so much more “special” I guess.

You absolutely don’t NEED to register for fine china or silver, but it is just a long-standing tradition in most cases.

As far as the pattern, pick whatever you like 🙂

I think people register for it now because it’s the only chance to basically have a whole fancy set of something gifted to you.  That being said, I opted not to register for it.  I live in a one bedroom apartment with no space for the dishes I already own…

We registered for china and silver because I love fancy things.  I always loved gonig over to Grandma’s and getting out the fancy plates for holiday dinners.  And I never minded polishing mom’s silver before Christmas.  Also since my family is like that – they love to buy that sort of thing and we received all of our place settings and our silver.  Our house is a mess right now so we haven’t unpacked and washed it all, but as soon as we do I’m going to cook a really nice meal for my hubby and serve it on the fancy plates.  🙂

I have waited sooo long for formal china and crystal – but we didn’t register for silver (REAL silverware is $500 a placesetting).

I love china so much I registered for two – a formal pattern accented with platnium and a casual porcelain (Sophie Conran for Portimerion).  I loveee china.

My china is prob my very favorite registry gift!  We have received four place settings so far, and I cried when I opened the first one lol.  I love that it is starting a family tradition, and it is something I will be able to hand down to our kids or grandchildren one day.

We chose a setting that is traditional with a little modern twist: platinum edges, but applied in a feathered, deconstructed way.  It fits us so well, and I just love it!!!  It is certainly not a necessity, but I am happy we decided to register for it 🙂

@sarahbabs:  your china sounds beautiful!  We got 4 place settings from someone and I just saw that someone purchased a huge set of 8 place settings that comes with 2 platters and a bowl- I am so excited. China is also my fav registry gift.
