I don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner. Our pups HATE taing pills. What animal doesn’t? I refuse to buy those pill pockets and our oldest pup has figured out how to seperate the pill from the cheese or meat and spit it back out. So, our of desperation and refusal to shove the thing down her throat (which I as close to doing) I put it on some peanut butter and she lapped that thing up! Seriously! I just get some peanut butter on the end of a butter knife, stick the pill to it and she eats it like it is the best thing ever! Which it is. I mean, come on. Peanut butter?!?! My other pup actually closes her mouth around it so I can just pull the knife out and it is all in her mouth. OMG. Why has nobody ever told me about this?
Has anybody else done this?
Sorry. Random. But this is epic in a house where they have to get pills 3 times a day for the next 3 weeks. (Ugh… expensive sick pups.)

Yes! Our pup is just clearing up some skin issues and is taking a few pills each day. Thanks to peanut butter, he thinks that medicine time is the best time EVER.
Seriously, he hears the jar being opened and comes running right over. Peanut butter = lifesaver.

At the beginning of your post all that came to mind was just use peanut butter. My girls will eat anything if there is peanut butter on it. Glad you found a solution and it worked for you.

we use cream cheese. and we just form the creamcheese around the pill… our pup is lazy and doesnt chew anything so he just swallows it. or we use butter… (good for their coat also!) or we use liverworst… the pup loveesss that!

My puppy will eat anything. For over a week I was secretly stuffing pills in a ball of soft food for him and one day I must have been sloppy and the pill came poppying out his mouth. He looked at it on the ground and without a second thought picked it up and swallowed it whole! Great idea though if he ever starts getting more selective ha.

This reminds me of the “How to Give Your Dog Drugs” guide. I love it!

Peanut butter has been the staple of doggie pill taking for generations in my family 😉

One of my dogs actually doesn’t like peanut butter, can you believe it? But I generally just stick the pills down their throats. They really don’t mind, and then I give them a treat afterwards, and all is well with the world 🙂

I wish there was something like this for cats. We usually end up tossing pills down the big one’s throat. The little one is impossible to medicate, so we choose to let the vet give her a shot if applicable.

@Mrs Hedgehog: Oh my gosh…If Sophie (my dog) sees me heading towards the cupboard where the peanut butter is stored, her tail goes nutso. She looovvveessss taking medicine b/c it involves peanutbutter. lol

We’re lucky that with our current dog, we can just put the pill in her bowl with the rest of her food and she gobbles it right up.
But peanut butter has always worked great with past dogs who were a little trickier to give pills too!

Luckily, Great Danes aren’t smart enough to pick a pill out of anything 😛 We just toss it in their food, and down it goes!
