She sounds like a friend I have who texts and emails me 10-20 times a day to find her a job, write emails for her to send to a guy who is stringing her along, and basically fix anything she doesn’t like about her life. When I respond back that I don’t have time to run her life for her because I’m working 60 hours a week and have my own problems, (not to mention, I will not do most of what she is asking on principal) she just continues.

It must be even harder for you because she is family.

Your mom’s advice is good. Ignore her messages. She will get more desperate for a while, then ease up on you when she can find someone else to cling to. Only reply when you want to, and realize that ultimately, there is not much you can do to help. She has to take control of her own life, and no one else can do that for her. Maybe try to get her some professional help? I am trying to convince my friend to speak with a therapist. No luck yet, but that is what she really needs.

And try not to feel guilty. She will try to put blame on you and manipulate you. She may argue that she relied on you because you helped her before and so you owe it to her to continue. She may even think she is sincere. Just focus on the truth. Do what you can to be there for your sister, but don’t let it hurt your life and hurt hers by keeping her from taking responsiblity for her choices.
