This morning I went on my first shopping trip. I had a plan to go to a “normal” store, and one couture store. I thought trying on the couture would just be fun, you know? The first “normal” store went great- they were really nice, helpful, not pushy, and I ended up with it narrowed down to 3 Casablancas that I was in love with.
Or so I thought.
I went to the couture store after lunch, where they were very French, there was only 10 dresses in the whole store. I tried on a few and was just “meh”. Then, they brought me a Sarah Houston Hillary Dress. On the manican, it was gorgeous. I never thought I’d pull it off. I tried it on, and I was just…speechless. I looked like the 1920’s screen goddess I always wanted to be! I was a fucking bombshell and I never thought I could look that beautiful!! I had to fight the tears… but it is way beyond my budget. My aunt is actually gifting me my dress because she thinks I’m too frugal, but I would never ever ask for 4K!!!! Without alterations!!! What do I do? Try and forget about it?! I think no matter what dress I pick now this one will be haunting me :((( Why did I do this to myself!?!

Is there any way you can find it used on Craigslist or the Classifieds here?

It’s a gorgeous dress (at least the back as shown in the pictures online). Is there something similar in your price range? Is there something else that you can cut out of the wedding to make the price point work?
I fell in love with a 6K Vera and ultimately decided that it wasn’t worth it for me. I ended up with a gorgeous Sophia Tolli for less than 1K. I actually liked my dress better than the Vera 🙂

If you ever watch Say Yes to the Dress…you just broke their #1 rule by trying on a dress that you fell in love with that is over your budget! (gasp!)
Well, can you also contribute to the dress? Would your aunt freak her freak over the 4K? I just googled the dress and it is gorgeous.
Would your parents help at all…maybe with 1K?

Steph, I don’t watch TV! That’s what I get, I should have known : And i went looking and she is very exclusive, I was hoping I’d find her more but this is the 2010 line of course, so it’d be a waiting game and maybe never find it.
I’m actually so surprised that they don’t show the front, it has a scoop neck and the straps are all gorgeous beading and stones.
I would contribute, but to be honest I would feel like a fool wearing something so expensive. I just cannot justify it. I just couldn’t believe how good it looked! I just need to start searching for those scoop backs, does anyone know of any other designers that do that?

Dang, that is one gorgeous and vintage-glamour sexy dress.
I agree that you should look for it used. Try preownedweddingdresses.com, oncewed.com, woreitonce.com, and the WB classifieds…that’s really a gem! Maybe you can find it for half the price or even less!

Eek! It is really pretty- how about buying the sample?? Are you able to fit into the sample? Thats what I did, my dress was originally 7k, but because i opted to buy the sample it was more than half off!

It looks like I just missed the boat on her trunk shows for now, so I’ll have to wait. But I honestly do just feel silly. I mean its a very simple silk dress with a cowl neck and a scoop back. I feel like that wouldn’t be hard to find more of? I am having a hard time right now but maybe I’m just not searching the right way. I also feel like I could get the same dress custom made for me for more like 2k, which is the absolute most I’d ever spend. I’ll figure it out! But I sure learned my lesson ladies 🙂

No, it probably wouldn’t be impossible to find a similar dress, but the price of that dress takes into account the way it’s cut just so and has the luxe fabric that makes you feel like a movie star. It’s a really gorgeous dress, and I’d make sure I couldn’t find it used before searching for something similar!

How about finding a really good dressmaker and getting something *similar* made just for you?
That’s what I’m doing – I fell hard for a pic I found of a dress made for a catwalk show, but never put into actual production. I don’t know what it could have cost for reals, (a Jim Hjelm) but I’m sure it would be a helluva lot more than the 350 euro ($450 approx) my dressmaker is charging. Including fabric.
How gorgeous is this?
