If you’re good at gift wrapping I’d just use really nice thick wrapping paper. The cheap stuff seems to be thinner & might show whatever pattern your talking about through it.  Then it would really look like a gift box. I love gift wrapping though so that would be easiest for me to make it pretty.

Paint is going to look much better assuming you paint it well. I’d suggest a quality primer to hide any pattern on the box. You’re also going to get a better finish if you use many thin coats of spray paint, instead of just a few coats thickly painted. Be sure to not recoat the box before the instructions tell you its safe to do so.

If you do use fabric I would use spray adhesive to stick the fabric to the box. I’d also make sure you use a dark fabric that will hide any pattern better. Extremely sharp scissors be useful.

Definitely use a primer first.  And well-applied spray paint will give you a nicer result than brushing it on.  But to second what Julia_SD said, make sure to do multiple thin coats, and to not get the can too close to the box or you’ll get runs.

Kilz makes a spray primer.

@jessyrez:  that box doesn’t look tall enough to accommodate cards going it.  are you going to put it on it’s end?

@jessyrez:  why don’t you just go to the dollar store to see if they have a larger/taller box.  then you can either paint it or cover it.

I got a biggish plain box from the craft store to paint and cut a slit in the top – it actually looks a LOT like the one you posted from Etsy, just no bow.  SUPER easy, and not expensive at all.

I made my own card box out of 3 different sized boxes (I found at the local craft store) and gray satin fabric…it was definitely time consuming but I love how it turned out!
