So my mother (who tends to blow everything out of proportion) keeps telling me that we shouldn’t go to Mexico because they are cutting everyone’s heads off and its everywhere… etc. We are going to be in Mexico 1 day (Cozumel) and we will be on the cruiseship at night… we would also be going to the cayman islands, belize and isla roatan. We haven’t set this in stone yet, no payments have been made so I want your HONEST opinions…. if we are going to be in any REAL danger, please let me know. The trip would be May 15th. Thanks! 🙂

One of my FI’s groomsmen just went to Cozumel for a week with his gf and family, they all came back with heads intact.
You mother is blowing things out of proportion.

You will not be in danger. The unrest is not occuring in the touristy parts of Mexico. You’ll be fine especially since you are going for a couple of hours and back on the boat. Your heads will survive.

lmao its not like you’re going to Juarez, you’ll be fine.

as long as you don’t leave the resort to hang out with drug dealers, you’ll be fine.

Haha, wow that is crazy! I have been to that area of Mexico twice in the last two years, and am planning to go back for my honeymoon. You have nothing to worry about!
A few years back, there was unrest in Roatan and some cruise ships cancelled that port of call. A cruise ship isn’t going to dock somewhere that puts the passengers in jeopardy.

Ok thanks everyone… I wasn’t even going to ask because my Fiance completely ignored her comments because he thinks it’s fine. But, I figured being able to tell her other people have gone recently and were ok might make her be less crazy about it. And I figured the ship wouldn’t stop somewhere that welcomes us with heads lined up on sticks… 🙂 I figured just in case, we will definately go with the cruiseline excursions at that port to be extra safe instead of paying a local company.

You will be 100% fine – the touristy parts of Mexico (which Cozumel definitely is a part of) are not where the violence is. Your mom is definitely freaking out over nothing.

let me share a government travel warning with your mum
We advise you to exercise caution and monitor developments that might affect your safety because of the risk of terrorism.
Pay close attention to your personal security and monitor the media for information about possible new safety or security risks
Tourists are often targeted for petty crimes such as pick-pocketing and theft, particularly on public transport.
While travelling, don’t carry too much cash and remember that expensive watches, jewellery and cameras may be tempting targets for thieves.
pretty scary huh? ummm, its for the United States and yet people still travel there in their thousands every day so tell mom to take a chill pill and you will be fine – just dont do anything silly like take a midnight tour of the back alleys on foot

This is what fear does to people. It strips them of logic.
All the violence is happening in the poor areas of mexico. The drug dealers have no issues with the resort towns. Plus, since the economy is supported by the tourists cash, there is higher police protection in those areas.
Just don’t go hanging out with drug dealers. They have no beef with you or reason to kill you. Steal a block of cocaine and you might just get your head chopped off.

we spent 9 days in Cancun and even travelled inland to Chichen Itza…. TOTALLY FINE!

wow what a disrespectful subject line, how would the families of those who’ve been beheaded feel?

you will be fine! though it was about 2 years go – Fiance and i did a cruise that stopped in cozumel and we rented a jeep and drove all over the island – even where the locals lived..probably not the safest idea in hindsight but we were fine.
Fiance is in Mexico City as we speak – for a week – i miss him so much. You will be fine!

And tell your mom that her comments are extremely offensive, especially to the good, non-drug dealing people who live in Mexico.
