I guess it depends what the name is. I have a friend that named her kid “Aoife” [pronounced ee-fa]and literally no one knows how to pronounce it. I feel bad for her, and know she’s already having issues with it.

jellybellynelly :  Well that depends on where you live, Aoife is a very popular Irish name in many places. Feeling bad for someone having a cultural name is pretty narrow minded.

abouttodoit17 :  We aren’t in ireland, they aren’t irish, they picked a name because it was interesting. I’ve just personally seen how difficult she takes it when people try to sound it out or write her name as “eva” and she has to correct them. She doesnt like it. Maybe in the future she will, but *shrug* I do feel bad for her and never want to see a child hurting. If thats narrow minded then ok.

jellybellynelly :  Its popular in many places that have large Irish communities outside Ireland actually. People can learn to pronounce a name, I don’t see what’s so unreasonable about that.

Imogene was a character on degrassi. I’ve heard the name quite a few times and don’t think it’s unknown at all!

Oh, I don’t think that’s bad at all as far as being obscure. It’s pretty recognizable and easy to say. I would go with it if you love it, I wouldn’t be worried about it.

kiram :  I don’t think there’s anything wrong or too ‘out there’ about the name Imogen. It’s a lovely name and if you like it then definitely use it!

kiram :  I don’t think Imogen is too out there actually. Not like in my example where it sounds completely different than its spelled.

There is a TV show character with that name up here (Degrassi LOL), so its unique, but not weird.

I don’t think it’s as out there as you think it is. There’s enough pop culture references linked to it that most people have probably heard it before, even if they’ve never met someone with the name. And while people might not know to pronounce it if reading it, it’s not a hard name to pronounce so once they hear it once are likely to not have any problems saying it correctly.

I like it. It is unique but it’s easy to pronounce upon reading it. Do it!

Imogen has become a popular name in my friend group actually. The only complaints I’ve heard is people constantly correcting others on how to pronounce it to their preference.
