We live in a different state than where our wedding will be, and in a few months we’re moving to the complete opposite side of the country. My dress is purchased and at my parents’ house in the same city where our wedding will be.
I will be in town (where my dress is) at the end of this month, and again at the beginning of August, but the flights from where we’re moving are really expensive and I’m starting a new job, so those are the only times I will be able to travel there before our September 28th wedding.
I bought the dress preowned and it’s been cleaned and in great condition. The girl I bought it from is my height exactly, so I don’t think it will need to be shortened. She is about 5-10 pounds heavier than I am, but it’s fairly close to fitting. It needs to be taken in significantly in the hips and I’m going to get cups put in so I don’t have to wear a bra.
I have no idea how dress fittings work, but I think most people get more than one! I figured the end of this month was too early to have a fitting (though my weight is very stable and I’m not trying to lose any before the wedding). Would you all suggest just doing one fitting when I’m in town in August? Will that be enough?
Thanks for any input!

@RunnerBride13: One fitting was enough for me, and it sounds like it should be for you as well.

Since it’s pre-owned, it must already have the bustle made. That was the only reason I’m having two fittings. I think one should be fine.

@RunnerBride13: How many days prior to the wedding will you be in town? If you can be there a few days early maybe you could try on your dress just to make sure it’s how you want it, and if any changes still need to be made the shop can work on it asap to have it done for your wedding?

I would allow yourself at least two fittings, the first when you’re in town in August and the second about a week before your wedding. That way, you’ll have the opportunity to make any adjustments after the first round of alterations. Also, even if you aren’t planning to diet, you may lose weight at the end and want to have the dress taken in again. FWIW, I had four fittings!

Thanks! The wedding is on a Saturday and I think the earliest I can be in town might be Tuesday or Wednesday. The dress does already have a bustle, so it sounds like that will help! With the time change going West, I could probably get in with my seamstress the day I get into town, so I’ll have to talk with her about that possibility. Not an ideal situation but my only other option is to bring my dress to the east coast for fittings and then bring it back with me for the wedding. That sounds worse!!
