Hi Bees, I just have a question about rescheduling an interview. I’m interviewing with my dream school district. The lady in charge if hiring has been in contact with me for about a month and I’ve had a phone interview and moved on to an in-person interview. She emailed me on Friday saying to come in on April 24th, but that is the day that I am required by my university to present my graudate research project. I emailed her back and said that I would not be able to do it that day because I will have multiple presentation times, and they have not assigned times yet. I also emailed her supporting documentation (an official email from the college listing the conference date). She emailed me back yesterday and said she’d see what she could do about moving my interview date. My question is….. Will this hurt my chances of being hired? I mean, I feel like I did everything right, I am just really nervous that this may be a problem. Anyone in HR or has experience with this kind of problem who could give me a better idea??

I feel like because it’s an official thing and if the interview is not pushed too far back I think it should be ok.

I very much doubt it, especially since you have a really good reason for needing your interview reassigned to a new day. At my office applicants change their interviews all the time, sometimes for not so good reasons. Its never stopped them from getting hired though.

I think you’ll be alright. You seem to have a valid reason to move it and the conflict isn’t something it is possible for you to reschedule.

Normally I would say you cannot move a date, but you have a reason that is legit so I think you will be ok.

I agree with prior posters. You have asked to reschedule the interview due to a very legitimate reason, and you have provided specific documentation to support your reasoning. This case is similar to one in which an already employed person is unble to be available for an interview due to an important work obligation at his or her current job.
This actually demonstrates that you are responsible. If you were asking to reschedule the interview for a more frivolous reason, I would strongly discourage you from doing this. That is not the case, here, however.

At first I was like yes that will hurt but then you said you sent her documentation and I think that makes all the difference. It proves you are doing something important that cannot be rescheduled, not just going on vacation or something.

I think you should be fine. You don`t even know right now if there is a conflict, but rather than just hope for the best you were proactive about it.
