Could it be that we’re misunderstanding fruit cake here?  That perhaps what they mean is a cake with fruit falvorings and not the unfortunate Yuletide dessert known to Americans?

@NatDawn:  Manhours and expertise.  The number of people with the skills to make that thing is probably pretty small, and all of them no doubt worked long and hard to construct it.
