I say if it is in your budget (once you figure out what the caterer would charge) then do it. As for people “overdoing it” if there is liquor – those people will overdo it with whatever alcohol is available. If they are trying to get drunk and there is any sort of alcohol available, they will get drunk. It has nothing to do with cocktails vs. beer vs. wine. In terms of the % of alcohol content it isn’t much different anyway (thanks to driver’s ed for that tidbit).

My best friend had a very elegant wedding this past July that served wine and beer, soda, etc. I don’t think anybody missed the liquor – I know I didn’t! 🙂 I think we are doing wine and beer only – the extra cost just isn’t worth it especially since neither Fiance nor I are big drinkers.

Agree with Kittyachi.  People are going to get drunk no matter what if that’s what they’re aiming for.  There’s not that big of a difference in alcohol content, and frankly, people will be better-behaved if they’re drinking their “usual” drink.  For example, I have friends who can drink tons of liquor and be fine, but act ridiculous after a few glasses of wine.  Plus, you can have the bartender specify no shots, and that will cut down on some craziness.
