Last night my friend (and future MOH) and I went to a wine tasting class in Albany. If you’re in the area and want details, shoot me a message. It was great fun and I highly recommend it to anyone.
Anyway, we ended up sitting next to a couple who got married last October. Apparently for their wedding, they bottled their own demi bottles of wine and gave them out as favors for guests. They bought a special wine making kit and bottled everything themselves. The minute they said that, my friend turned to me and said, “You need to do this!!” My SO is BIG into wine, and I’m really enjoying learning about it with him.
I had already been seriously considering the idea of having a wine guestbook, where guests sign different bottles of wine we provide that we’ll open on different anniversaries, like these:

All of this leaves me with a number of questions. Is this too much wine? Would you want a mini bottle of wine as a favor? What would you want if you don’t drink wine? Should we bottle our own wine, or just purchase some and make fancy labels?

People are picky about wine — either they don’t like it or only like certain varietals, rarely are people open to enjoying whatever would be given to them. I would hate to see all of your hardwork go to waste.
We’re getting married at a winery because I love wine, of all kinds from 2 Buck Chuck to fancy schmancy stuff. But I would still be weary about drinking homemade wine. It doesn’t sound appetizing to me.
I like the wine bottle guest book idea. You would pick your wines, and it would be very thoughtful to you guys.

@jpr: Our first kiss was outside a winery near my hometown. This winery has pretty good prices on barrels that you can bottle in full or half-size bottles. We are thinking about this either as a favor or just having them on the table. Honestly, if people don’t like wine they’ll leave them… but you know the wine drinkers will be snatching them up! I think it’s better than a lot of generic favor ideas.

The wine gust book is the cutest thing ever! I would def do it.
I think the bottles for guests would be great…. BUT I love wine, my DH’s family owns a winery, we have family who live in Napa. In general, if you made it, I think my hubby and I would probably give it a try but not expect too much.
I you just gave us a bottle as a gift we would love it… though I usually drink white and he drinks red.

Thanks for your suggestions! We’ll keep thinking about it, and I’ll make sure that if we do give out mini bottles for favors, we have red and white options.

Mmm wine! I love both ideas. The people who don’t take favors will just mean that someone else gets a couple of them. (I’d be all over that, haha.)
