It really doesn’t faze me at all.  My dad taught me to drive, and he’s from Massachusetts, so he made sure I knew how to handle winter.  I went to undergrad in the mountains of PA, lived in Iowa for a year, and now live in the mountains of Virginia, plus we go to Vermont twice a year regularly, driving up and back in February.  It really doesn’t bother me a lick, even in my small Saturn.

What does make me crazy is how everyone else in Virginia loses their damn minds whenever there is a drop of precipitation around here.  They drive like people possessed in the rain, never mind the snow!  Makes me grumpy as hell.  They’re calling for us to have our first winter weather tomorrow morning, a wintry mix, so we’ll see what happens.  FI has a doctor’s appointment he can’t miss, and I’ll likely be driving him with the weather.  It wigs him out, but his first long-trip driving experience was in the giant blizzard that hit the East Coast in 2010, so snow makes him wicked jumpy.

Nope. If I have to, I put my car in four wheel drive and take it slow. Slow and steady wins the race.

Driving on ice freaks me out terribly.  Last year I got stuck in an ice storm and it took 4 hours to drive 20 miles and I saw numerous wrecks.   I hope I never have to go through that again.

Yes I’m nervous about winter driving as I haven’t done it much. DH grew up in a winter wonderland (NE Ontario), so it’s all he’s ever known. That being said, last weekend we nearly died going over a mountain pass during winter conditions in the Canadian Rockies. Hit a major patch of ice under compact snow and veered into the opposite lane and then into a pull-out area where we hit a bank of snow from a plough. We were 1 metre from driving over a cliff with a very steep drop-off. Had we not have been going 40 km/hr and my DH didn’t know how to handle his vehicle, it could have been very bad for us. Luckily, some guys who saw our little mishap came and pulled us out of the snow bank with their truck and all was good. They had also commented on how weird the snow conditions were, so it wasn’t just us having trouble on the roads. I was a ball of anxiety for the rest of the trip through the mountains.

My in-laws live in PA, I have lived in FL my whole life.  I think it is terrifying driving in the winter up North.  I try to avoid it as much as possible, but there are times when I have to because I get terribly car sick in the mountains if I’m not driving.

@sweetchiquita12:  It was so so so scary! I didn’t realize the scariness until DH yelled GET OUT OF THE TRUCK WE’RE ON A CLIFF!!!! I was silly and didn’t have shoes on (I take them off during long distances) and had to fumble with my boots to get them on.

I actually had nightmares about it that night and I’m just so glad that DH is well-versed in physics and vehicle control because he knew exactly where to steer us and where to drive off the road into. It could have been so much worse. I’ll definitely be wearing shoes next time we drive through the mountains in winter conditions.

@sweetchiquita12:  I was always afraid to drive in the snow with my old car (ford focus) and got into may accidents in it, because i just had no weight! I started having to put two 100 pound buckets of sand in the trunk near the wheel wells to help traction,  and when i got stuck (because that was always) i had my sand and my shovel. But then i got my nissan altima its a beast Im much more comfortable driving now. And the way I see it if you want to be a dumba$$ and drive like a maniac go around me Ill be taking my time!

Now i live in the city and street parking in the snow is terrible so I bring it to my moms to store. she hate he car in the snow so now she drives mine threw the winter.
