So I am having a winter wedding, the ceremony and reception are at a venue which sits on the water so it has a very large deck attached to the reception room and overlooks the water. What I planned on doing was utilizing the deck and having it open for guests to move in and out, I would have it decorated, and hopefully have a Smore’s bar and use a fire pit. I also want to rent heat lamps as well. Given the colder temps in January do you think this is crazy? I thought it would be really fun and really give out the cozy winter vibe, but I am getting a little paranoid, what do you guys think?

@FutureMrsJohnston: Where is your wedding? You never know…we got married on January 20th in Baltimore…two years ago there was a blizzard that same time of year. On our wedding day it was sunny and 50! How cold is it normally in your area? If you do go for it, just be flexible about it enough to realize the money may go to waste if it’s too cold and nobody uses it at all, and be okay with that 🙂

Oh I just love this! If you are renting heat lamps… be sure to rent enough. I also love having some throws around for guests to snuggle up with outside… I’ve also seen shawls or pashminas supplied in a basket, but perhaps it wouldnt be enough warmth… I also love the idea of maybe a hot chocolate or cider bar! So fun!

@BookishBelle: The area I am in has multiple personality weather, lol.. I am a little further south from you so we def have days where its freezing and days when its a little warmer. Yeah I am accepting the fact that it might go to waste but I dont want to let go of my vision! lol

@nl: I love the idea of the shawls/pahmina but omg its expensive, lol.. I LOVE the apple cider/hot chocolate bar idea though! I might do that instead of the smore’s bar.. 🙂

@FutureMrsJohnston: Im a diy girl, and Im wondering if it would match your astmosphere if you did “fleece” shawls/ blankets. They have solid colored fleece, and you could start collecting joann fabrics coupons to use, and do the no sew kind. If you have an ultra formal event though you may not like the way that sounds….

i like the idea, but i probably wouldn’t be hanging out outside in january for very long. i went to a feb wedding that was supposed to have a heated area outside and it was def still too cold

@nl: Hmm that sounds interesting… I will have to look into it. What does “no sew kind” mean? Sorry, I have never sewn anything in my life! lol

@li612: Well I wouldnt necessarily be expecting anyone to spend a ton of time outdoors, people will mainly be inside but I thought it would be fun to give them the option. Especially with a smores bar next to a fire pit.. but yeah I totally see your point

@FutureMrsJohnston: oh, gotcha. the wedding I went to had all of the dancing/dj/bars outside (in the enclosed “heated” area), so it wasn’t ideal. i do love the idea of a fire pit tho

This is super cute & sounds like a great idea.
Just be weary that some of the outdoor heaters require propane.. so don’t want those anywhere near the bon fire!
