It’s funny because it’s so ridiculous, but I totally sympathize with you. Luckily, as a teacher, I can just say “Oh shit! I forgot to do X, Y, Z” and hightail it back to my classroom or to another area. It’s so uncomfortable when someone is being so rude about others and thinks it’s okay. I agree with PPs. You’ve tried to be polite and drop hints, but she isn’t getting them. Just a simple “I’ve enjoyed talking with you, but I’m really focusing on work and would prefer to spend my breaks alone relaxing. Thanks for understanding.” Then just walk away and don’t give her the option. When I was student teaching, there was a teacher at lunch who was making fun of what a student was wearing and she was mean. Really mean. The other student teachers and I were so uncomfortable and did the whole smile, but then move away. I had to ask my host teacher if that was how people actually talked (no one else discussed students at lunch there) and she said no and that was way over the line and inappropriate. I HATE gossip. You get out of high school for a reason. Gossip needs to stop then.

the walk away part is epic. Don’t give her time to rebut. Perfect.
