$100,000 to $150,000 is average.  I purchased my first home for $60,000, and it wasnt a dump, just not in the best location, and older.

We will most likely purchase our forever home for about $130-150,000, and the really nice homes go for about $300,000, the best homes in the best neighborhoods.

we’ve tried to buy 4 houses in the past 6 weeks and have lost all in crazy bidding wars (we’ve bid anywhere from 15k to 35k over ask with absolutely no conditions – financing home inspection etc. – but still no luck). We are looking at typical family homes 2000-2600 sqft on pretty small sized lots in subdivisions. We are trying to stay in the mid-600ks and it’s been challenging at the price point to say the least. We are about a 45 mins from Toronto. It’s very expensive in most of Canada.

The fact that in some places people can buy homes for under 500k makes me so jealous! Well, that and the lack of snow! 😛

I’m in Sydney, Australia, and the property market is completely ridiculous here.  We closed on a house a little under a month ago; it’s a 3 bedroom 2.5 bathroom townhouse (in a complex of 8) and we paid $627000.  It needed painting and new carpet (we managed to get the upstairs done before we moved in, the downstairs is a work in progress!) and the kitchen will need an overhaul at some point, but it’s very liveable and has a nice outdoor space as well.  We’re 40 minutes by train from the central city; if we’d gone another 2-3 kilometres towards the city we would have added easily 100-150k to the purchase price.  Average cost of a house here is now over $1million; Darling Husband had an apartment even further out of the city and in four years he made 80k on it.  We feel like we did pretty well in the current market, but if you don’t have help from parents or have been saving since you were five, getting onto the ladder is very hard.  We were fortunate that Darling Husband bought his apartment before the market went crazy, and I had a property in my home town (much less ridiculous market!) which I also sold, giving us a good deposit.
