@ForeverBirds:  First of all, awesome!  I remember when my Fiance and I were living with his parents before getting our own place, and I can totally understand why that’s such a huge step. 🙂

Also, please don’t use the word “retarded” when you mean something is silly or stupid, etc. It’s offensive and hurtful to those with intellectual disabilities (http://www.r-word.org/r-word-why-pledge.aspx). Thanks! 🙂

@DrTeeth:  I normally wouldn’t comment on a topic like this, but I clicked your (general term) website and I just want to chime in.

It’s offensive. It’s derogatory. The R-word is hate speech.

Offensive? Maybe to some people. Just because you’re offended doesn’t mean you’re right.

Derogatory? I disagree based on the textbook definition of the word “Derogatory.”

Hate speech? Absolutely not. The definition of “hate speech” is in no way remotely related to the word “retarded.”

I just want to say that the website you are circulating is incorrect and enforcing brute-force shaming of people. I understand you don’t like the word. I can respect that. But I cannot respect an organization attempting to shame me for using a word using incorrect terms.

@Hyperventilate:  I really don’t want to thread jack here, but what exactly is your definition of “derogatory” and “hate speech?”

@DrTeeth:   I will leave you with dictionary.com’s definition.

Use of the word does not attack anyone.

Use of the word does not belittle anyone (AKA: disparage) despite the fact that hate speech is aimed towards people of particular gender, race, or ethnic group.

Edit: While I disagree with being offended with the word, I am not saying you should not be offended. That’s your perogative and no one can really take that from you. All I’m saying is that the information on the website you are using to support your backing is flawed and you should seek a better source.

@Hyperventilate:

Use of the word does not belittle anyone (AKA: disparage) despite the fact that hate speech is aimed towards people of particular gender, race, or ethnic group.

So using a word that describes a group of individuals with a particular disability to mean “lame, stupid, etc” isn’t belittling?

Edit: While I disagree with being offended with the word, I am not saying you should not be offended. That’s your perogative and no one can really take that from you. All I’m saying is that the information on the website you are using to support your backing is flawed and you should seek a better source.

Thanks for your input.  I’m going to let to OP have her thread back now. 🙂
