Oh ladies…. this suit ordeal was… well, an ordeal.
I knew from the start that I wanted suits over tuxes…. I am just not a big fan of tuxes, and I hate how rentals fit my Fiance.
So, I was pretty insistent that we get something that we could tailor to fit him.
Now, in my head I was dreaming of J.Crew suits… their good fit, clean lines, excellent fabrics….
(mmm… yummy J.Crew models…. I mean…suits)
But those jackets alone are $200 and up… and they need pants, shirts, and ties to go with that!
I couldn’t possibly ask my guy, or his guys, to pay that much- that’s more than my BMs are paying!
So, with my J.Crew dreams and Rental Tux budget, I went out in search of a suit.
I came close one day with Macy’s. They had a brown suit that seemed to fit the bill. (Did I mention we wanted tan or chocolate brown? Yeah, TRY finding that at a rental place. I dare you… You’ll find 1 or 2, and you may or may not like them.)
This is the Macy’s Suit- a brown pinstripe Perry Ellis suit-separate that cost us about $200 after shipping. We opted against the vest.
We thought we could live with this one. But, the more we thought about it, that was $200 without the cost of a shirt and tie… and add to that the fact that 2 of our guys fall under “Big and Tall”, which would mean an additional $50 for their jackets….
Guilt set it. Our Groomsmen are used to spending $100 on a rental. How could I possibly request that they spend nearly $300 on suits/shirts/tie they didn’t even get to pick for themselves?
(FYI, we did buy Fiance this suit as a “test run” for the color, and he is keeping it… it’s a great suit!)
On a random lunch visit with FI’s best man, he mentioned a store that he and his fiance went to when they were hunting suits… I had never heard of it. “K & G Fashion Superstore”.
Somehow, I had never heard of it, even thought it’s right next to my favorite TJ.Maxx!
Let’s just say that it is similar to TJ.Maxx, but that they have a suit department on crack.
All the suits are wonderful, many of them designer (some are private label to the store), and they are ALL made to be tailored- unhemmed, lots of seam allowance in the pants. They have a tailor on site. For a warehouse style place, they’re suit department is pretty legit.
The big challenge with it was finding 5 matching suits. Everything is arranged by size, so multiples don’t come easy.
However, we were lucky enough to find a rounder towards the front with all the same style- a tan stripe 3-piece suit that included the jacket, vest, and pants. All this cost…. wait for it…. $100.
I’m not even kidding. $100 for a 3-piece suit, and the in-store alterations are REALLY affordable ($10 for hem only, which is all most of them will need)
These are our suits, which Fiance picked up yesterday after they got all the sizes in for us.
But wait!!! There’s more!
Does this suit look familiar to anybody else?
What’s that? I found a suit that looks really similar to J.Crew’s seersucker suits? For $100?
Yes, dreams really can come true 😀
