Need some quick advice!!
I came into work yesterday and in our office kitchen, there was a pile of really nice, gourmet chocolate bars. There are times when people in our office get really high-end gift baskets, and they put the contents in the kitchen to be pillaged. Needless to say, this pregnant lady was THRILLED with free chocolate, so I took one and put in at my desk for safe keeping.
This morning, I go into the kitchen, and the chocolate bars are gone, but there’s now a note with a change box that says “Chocolate Bars are $10, please leave payment”.
1) The note doesn’t even say who left them or what the money is going towards, which I find horribly rude
2) I don’t really WANT a $10 chocolate bar. Free chocolate bar is one thing, but $10 just feels wrong on so many levels!
So what’s a girl to do?

@ExcitedScaredBee: You have got to be kidding me. I voted to give the bar back but honestly, I call shenanigans on this. Every office I have ever worked for treats for the taking we’re left in the kitchen. Even if this weren’t true, what idiot leaves stuff, has it taken and then demand payment?

1. Leave the $10 or put the chocolate bar back.
2.Never again take anything until you know for certain it is free.
I agree that the person was foolish to leave the chocolate bars without a sign. On the other hand, a stack of chocolate bars wouldn’t look like leftovers from a gift basket to me. We also leave treats and leftovers on the table in the lunchroom. But people also regularly bring in nuts, chocolate bars, Girl Guide cookies etc to sell for their kids.

If it is well known within your office that food left in the kitchen is free for the taking and there was no note when you took the chocolate bar, I’d just keep it.
That’s a pretty jerk move to pull a bait & switch on the whole office with the chocolate bars.

$10 for a chocolate bar? FACK NO. I’d probably put a post-it note on the chocolate bar that said “not worth $10” and then put it back in the kitchen next to the cash box. And then go buy 10 Hershey bars instead. 🙂

I voted other, I think I would leave the chocolate bar next to the change box. How strange! $10! Crazy!

I’d put the bar back with a note ‘Nice bait and switch, jackass’
