I’m still pretty early into my pregnance (a little over 10 weeks). My doctor said I’m okay to fly. My Darling Husband and I are flying tomorrow to go home and tell our families about the little one!
My concern isn’t really with the flying-but with the body scanner at the security check point. Do you think I will be okay going through those? I dont want it to do anything to the baby. Have any of you had experience with this before?

@Cady: thanks for the reassurance! 🙂

If you are still uncomfortable with it, let the TSA agent know and they will pat you down instead.

You get more radiation exposure by taking the flight (up to 10x more actually) than in the scanner. It’s totally fine.

Totally fine. DH and his coworkers all travel every week for work and he has had a couple of women who were pregnant on his teams. They went through the airport scanners twice a week, every week for pretty much their entire pregnancy with no problems.

I have been requesting secondary screening instead of going through the machine. I’m sure it is fine but just in case, it is an easy alternative that only takes a few extra minutes. Just a warning…I usually fly in jeans but I flew last week at 21 weeks and wore a long maxi dress. Whoa! The pat down was WAYYYY more intimate without the thick padding of denim around the crotch. Be warned!!! I was a little embarrased 🙂

It’s totally fine. I’ve been requesting a pat-down instead of going through the body scanner, just to be paranoid. 🙂 So that’s an option if you’re uncomfortable going through the machine.

I’ve flown 6 times since I found out I was pregnany, and I’m 9 weeks.
The first time, I didn’t think about the scanners until I was already at the airport. Since I didn’t have the info, I decided to do a pat down.
Holy cow! Be prepared to give away the milk for free! They were ALL up in my junk, and it was in front of other passengers. I was not happy!
Once I did the research, I learned that you are exposed to a lot more radiation in your everyday life than the scanners give off. Even sitting in front of your computer, using your cell phone…etc. exposes you radiation. So I decided just to go through them. I’m not really too worried.

@Max04092010: I wouldn’t worry about air flight exposure at all. Look at all of the flights celebrities like Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Kourtney Kardashian, and Angelina Jolie took while pregnant and their babies came out just fine. Even Duchess Kate just flew for a vacation while pregnant. I say to enjoy your last few vacations childless because once you have kids they either travel with you (which can be an ordeal) or you miss them like crazy when you travel without them.

It is most definately totally fine. I few at 16 weeks and went through the scanner. Like PP said if you don’t feel comfy with it ask a TSA to pat you down instead.

Absolutely, totally fine. Enjoy your visit!

If you fly southwest, they will give you a blue pass so you can get on first- I found sitting in the back of the plane made MS worse… not just the flight, but after when everyone stands up I struggled not to throw up. So I requested the priority after explaining myself and have sat in the second row each time ( I fly ALOT and generally fly southwest) and haven’t had an issue!
