Our wedding is still 5 months away, we booked our photographer (and paid a deposit which was a large percentage of the fee) almost a year ago but now I’m having second thoughts! Unfortunately I’m pretty sure it’s really not going to be possible to change our minds now, I doubt there is a ‘better’ photographer available on our date now at relatively short notice (is 5 months short notice?!) and I don’t think there’s much liklihood of us getting back the deposit so we can’t really afford to back out of our contract and cut the loss…
Hive I’m not sure why I’m posting this except for a sympathetic shoulder to lean on while I’m feeling a bit down – I think I probably spend far too much time looking at photographs of weddings – and a lot were probably taken by very expensive highly talented photographers… we choose ours based on cost and the fact we get full copyright and allowed to print pictures ourselves, but I think my ‘taste’ for really stunning photography is going to lead me to feel disappointed with what we’ll actually get from our wedding…
Has anyone else had a similar experience? What did you do? Do you think I’m being over dramatic?
Here’s our photographers website: http://www.patbweddingphotography.com/

The pictures on the website look nice! We also went with a cheaper photographer and I was a little worried. But we just got our engagement photos back this weekend and they are awesome! I’m actually really happy with the photographer and I’m pumped for the wedding.
Did you do an engagement shoot? Ours was free with the wedding package, but would you consider paying for one just to see?

I like the idea of doing engagement shots just to make sure of the photographers ability. I too am going the “cheap” route. I like the photographer I have found but it does concern me because there is a HUGE difference in prices compared to most wedding photographers.

We did do an engagement shoot actually… and I do like those pictures – more than a lot of the wedding pictures he’s blogged lately in fact; hopefully our engagement pictures are a better benchmark of what our wedding photos will be like, I’m glad you both mentioned that as I suppose I should go back and look at the engagement pictures too and they do make me feel a bit better.
We have another meeting in February to talk about the ‘shot list’ for the wedding so I am building a “virtual album” of the short of images I like which I plan to take along to that session and leave with him; hopefully he’ll see it as a useful guide to our tastes and not me trying to tell him how to do his job!

What exactly worries you about the photos the photographer has posted lately? Is it just a style issue or are there particular things that irk or bother you? I see some issues with over-editing and perhaps a lack of understanding in terms of basic composition. If it really eats at you and you have any hesitation, look around for alternatives! So many brides regret not following their gut – the photos are all you’re going to have to remember the wedding years from now!

he seems pretty pricy. I guess his bottom price is 1500 pounds and you don’t get a disk or an Album for that.

Hmm! I agree with the comments above. Go with your gut feeling, photo’s are SOOOOO important. Apart from that I just wanted to say Hi, not sure if you’re living here in England or just getting married here, but either way ‘Hello’. I too got married on April 30th (2009), and we too crossed the atlantic to do it, in South Beach Miami. Hope all the rest of your plans are going well
