I just went to a wedding where the bride did this. She just asked the girls to wear a long black dress from whatever store they wanted. It looked nice, but I’d only do it if I trusted my girls’ taste.

I watched that last night too!  I think the concept is cool, but I don’t know if it would translate off screen.

Tis what I’m doing, but I’ll be with them while they make their choices.  I want to make sure it looks good and the color is perfect ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m thinking I might have no choice but to do this! My Maid/Matron of Honor lives out of state, several hours away, and despite my gentle nudging the past few weeks, she has not kept her promise to visit an Alfred Angelo store to look at dresses. Meanwhile, another Bridesmaid or Best Man who got married last year and appears to still be in planning mode, keeps telling me we need to hurry up and order by the end of the month to have time for alterations. AHH! So yeah. I’m seriously ready to just tell them to wear whatever’s in their freakin’ closet.

I’m going to do black cocktail dresses of the bridesmaids’ choosing. There will be some guidelines, but I feel like it will look nice enough in pictures while still allowing the girls to all feel comfortable! I thought about it and I’m just not a bridesmaid dress kind of person.

I’m picking the brand and color (Jcrew) and then letting them get whatever style of dress they want.  My bridesmaids all have very different tastes, so this way they can pick something that’s the most flattering for them, but I don’t have to worry about it not looking cohesive.

I actually tried to do this and they slammed that idea down immediately. My BM’s actually preferred to all wear the same dress and wanted me to pick it out.. it was like the twilight zone or something ๐Ÿ™‚

All of my girls have different body shapes and height differences.  I think it’s only fair to them that they have a choice in what they feel comfortable in and look fabulous at the same time.  I just want SOME input. ๐Ÿ˜›

@MM423: Me too!  I just said “little black dresses” but it’s true…they all have good taste, and the one whose taste is quite different from mine, I trust to ask me before she buys if she has any doubts.  They all know my style, and I think they’ll all choose something they know I’ll like, but my first priority was that they all felt good about what they ended up with.

yes! i love my two bridesmaids because of who they are (and they are not simliar personalities at all!), so it seems wrong to make them look like matching sidekicks! i want them to wear what makes them feel good and what reflects their own personalities. ๐Ÿ™‚

Our current plan is to pick something green and knee length or a little shorter and just share it with everyone else via email (we live in 6 different cities) to make sure we don’t end up with five girls in seafoam and one in lime green or something like that.

I think they’re good with this plan but it’s hard to tell – we’re not really into dresses and the sort but I do want them to look a little special.

I only had one Bridesmaid or Best Man but yes, I asked her to wear what she wanted. I didn’t even know what color she was going to pick, I saw it for the first time at my wedding. I think it worked out really nicely. Even with multiple BM’s, I never got that whole matchy-matchy concept anyways, maybe because we don’t have this bridal party tradition in my culture, so I think different dresses would be just fine as long as you trust their taste. As my mom once asked me ” Are you doing the American tradition where some girls wear a uniform and line up next to you like dominos??” ๐Ÿ™‚ So no, none of that for me.

@meliss: Your mom’s quote made me laugh out loud.
