It is hard to tell which stone I prefer as the pics aren’t too crisp, but I probably prefer the dimensions of the smaller chubbier stone overall.

I have a emerald cut moissanite, and love it. You do have to make sure it is clean (a quick wipe with a cleaning cloth daily does it) but overall it is a great stone. I have mine cut with windmills which makes it look nicer to my eye. Mine is smaller than you want, at 1.5 on size 6.5 finger.  I will say that I would have bought a diamond if we could have comfortably afforded it, but we are building a home and this was a birthday present, so not reasonable to spend more than we did!

Do you happen to have another picture of the 2 ct. alone? Or perhaps another shot of them together? The picture with them both seems out of focus to me, making it hard to judge.

As for your second question, I love moissanite!

AMarie_ :  The very large genuine diamond you said you really want is not in his budget and since you are obviously willing to get a simulant, would just go with that….

Since you asked, be aware that moissanite doesn’t look exactly like a diamond. It sparkles differently and is cut a bit differently. That will be noticed by some, although most people will not ask or will pretend they don’t notice if asked!  Mossanite also can develop a difficult to remove stain, but not all of it does either!   Good luck.

AMarie_ :  Of the two you diamonds showed, the 1.63 looks much better. Clarity is super important in a step-cut stone because it doesn’t have the facets that a brilliant cut stone has to hide inclusions. Plus, the 3-stone setting you are considering will add additional finger coverage.

I’m not sure I would recommend you go for moissanite, mainly because of these 8 little words: “it also looks like a natural diamond stone.” There are many reasons women choose moissanite as a stone, and they are all perfectly valid. However, whenever I see a woman say she wants to get one because they look just like a diamond, it gives me pause. Not because they look all that different from a diamond (honestly, I’m sure most people won’t give it a second thought), but because if it matters to you that it passes as a diamond, then no matter who oohs and ahhs and assumes it’s a real diamond, you will always know it’s not and that will take away from your enjoyment of it.

So ask yourself this: let’s say a colleague says “Wow, what a nice ring. Is that a real diamond?”

If you imagine yourself proudly declaring “No! It’s actually this stone called moissanite, it’s more refractive than a diamond, and [… excitedly launches into a discussion about all of the cool features of moissanite]”, then absolutely consider going the moissanite route.

But if your reaction would be to either nervously declare “Well, we could have afforded a real diamond but I didn’t want to break the bank, and also [… starts launching into all of the reasons you didn’t really want a diamond anyway]”, or, worse, lie and say yes, I would recommend going for the diamond.

I think the smaller stone with better clarity is beautiful! With a cut like that, clarity is more important, I think.

My vote is smaller diamond. Maybe you can upgrade down the road and get your dream 2ct stone.

I have a moissanite emerald cut and receive nothing but compliments on it.

I think you should do some soul searching on whether you’ll be happy with moissanite long term. That’s the only thing that would make me doubt if you should go that way. I love mine, but I think you want a diamond based on how you wrote your post.

Hi Op, I’m having a similar situation at the moment. I also want a 2ct stone (atleast) which is not in our budget. I will be going with moissanite instead of a smaller diamond. I am looking at Harro or Fire and Brilliance.

AMarie_ :  I don’t have a moissanite, but know a few women who do. They’re pretty awesome. They’re everything great about a diamond without the price tag. If size is important (and clarity has to be with step cuts, as you already know), I’d say moissanite all the way. I’d like a pink one eventually, because I’d LOVE a pink diamond, but don’t have $50K-$100k to drop on a stone. Moissanite will totally give me my pink, sparkly fix!

Post pics, whatever you decide. Step cuts are amazing.
