We are hosting the ceremony and reception at a summer camp, where we met. The whole event will be outdoors, in the evening in late August. We will have a tented reception, with fairy lights as decoration. For the tables we are using wildflowers in small vases along with small candles. There will be a dance floor and a dj.
As for food, we decided on a hog roast with various sides. The hog will be roasted in a seperate location as to not make the guests uncomfortable, escpecially our vegetarian friends and family. We will do an assortment of pies instead of the traditional wedding cake. It will be a beer and wine only reception, but LOTS of it. Our friends like to get down! We will also have lawn games near the tent.
After the reception, guests are welcome to stay in the cabins at the camp. If not, there are a few hotels 5 minutes away from the location. We also will host an after party bonfire right next to the lake.
So is this too casual? Do any of you Bees foresee any problems here or have had experiences with wedding like this?

Sounds like a fun party to me! I don’t see the need for receptions to be stuffy, formal affairs. That’s great if that’s what you want, but at the end of the day, a reception is a party celebrating your marriage. If you want to celebrate this way then there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

I have no experience to draw on, but it sounds lovely to me. The setting will only appear too casual if you show up in a giant ball gown a la Cinderella.
If it’s in a wooded area maybe provide some bug spray?

A friend of mine had a similar wedding and to this day it is still one of my favorites I’ve ever been to!

I think the relaxed (def relaxed, not casual) feel is lovely! If I was a guest, I would also appreciate that you are roasting the hog elsewhere as I am always super grossed out when I see that lol. Have fun!!!

Love all of that!! Can I come too 😉

I think some centronella candles and maybe some fans or something to keep guests cool. I would be way too hot in august, but thats avoidable!

- Wedding: September 2017 - Poppy Ridge Golf Course
If it starts close to sunset I’d be ok with August, although fans would be appreciated. I don’t eat pork nor do I care for beer or wine but this still sounds like a fun day. 😄 Second pp on providing bug spray if possible but I’m always getting attacked so I know to bring my own.

This sounds like so much fun!! I’d love to be a guest!
A tip depending on weather and where you’re located: make sure you have bug spray on hand for guests to use. At least down here in TX we have mosquito heaven during the sweltering summer months even into August. Also, make sure you have a backup plan with an indoor option.

Thanks everyone! Mosquitos are bad in my area, we are in Indiana. I do plan on providing plenty of bug spray! I am also thinking about putting up citronella tiki torches around the tent and games. It won’t just be beer and wine of course! I think I am going to clean out a canoe, fill it with ice and put sodas and water in there 😊
