I got married October 1st. My SO and I were on a very tight budget, and to save money we decided to take up 2 family members’ offers to take the photos at our wedding. Each of these people do wedding photography as a “hobby.” I knew the photos wouldn’t be amazing, but I eventually made peace with the fact that we just could not afford an expensive photographer.
Our photos turned out mediocre at BEST. Our wedding day was perfect so it pains me to say that I have such a huge regret. The ceremony pics are okay, I can deal with them, but other than those you wouldn’t even know they were wedding pictures if I wasn’t in a wedding gown! Darling Husband and I don’t even look like we’re in love…this devastates me. We have ONE photo of us alone together, and it is a very “posed” picture and extremely unflattering of both of us. I tore through the photos trying to find one decent enough to put on FB and couldn’t even find ONE…this brought me to tears.
Would it be ridiculous to book a session with a professional photographer to “re-do” photos of just Darling Husband and me? With me in my dress and him in his tux. I feel so silly because my wedding was already months ago and I’m clearly not a bride anymore. It just breaks my heart that we have no pictures of the two of us :(.

Not at all–people do “day after sessions” all the time, that aren’t always literally the day after the wedding. If you’d like to have some professional portraits of you and your hubby to remember this special time, I say go for it!

Definitely not silly at all! I’m sorry you are disappointed with your pictures, and getting a very good pro to re-shoot you and your hubby really is the best way to ensure that you get some amazing wedding pictures.

Thank you both!!! I’m getting really excited about the idea now, because I have braces right now (and had them on our wedding day, unfortunately), and if we can wait until Spring or Summer to have the photos taken, the braces may be off. Yay!
Next step is convincing Darling Husband. I’m betting there’s not much he’d dislike more than a professional photo session, haha! I’m sure he’ll be easy to convince though because he knows how hurt I have been over the [lack of] photos…

Ours sucked too, we are doing the same thing next summer. We couldn’t afford it later in the summer so next summer will have to do. I would take them later rather than have ones I hated.

It would be great to relive it and play out some shots you can’t all fit in the big day 🙂

Thanks everyone! Your replies really reassured me. I talked to Darling Husband about it today and he didn’t protest at all!! He’s not really looking forward to renting the tux again though, haha. I’m just super excited and the thought of having better photos has really cheered me up a lot. Glad to hear that this is not a weird thing to do!
@tksjewelry: Sorry to hear that you’re not happy with your wedding photos either :(. We’ll probably be doing ours next summer as well.

I would definitely do a re-do of just the 2 of you. I’m doing a Rock the Dress session because we didn’t have enough time to do my bridals. If I can get Darling Husband to do a couple of shots, my gallery will be complete:)

Absolutely not ridiculous at ALL!! I had a ‘hobby’ photographer at my first wedding, and though he got some good pictures they don’t look ‘professional’. My friend who works in a camera store and loves taking pictures got the best ones…and looking back I wish I had more!

I think a day-after shoot is a great idea. Mr. LK and I chose to spend more time with our friends and family on our wedding day, and less time shooting portraits with our photographer, so a day-after shoot was always part of our plan. We got together with our photographer about a month after the wedding for a really fun time. He put on his regular suit, I wore my dress again and had my make-up done, and we rambled around one of our favorite places being as goofy and lovey-dovey as we wanted to be. It was a lot of fun, and our photographer will be blogging our photos later today!
