So, I’ll preface this by saying I don’t know if I believe in ghosts or spirits or anything like that but this seemed weird. Darling Husband and I went on a weekend getaway to Mackinac Island with some friends and just got back on Sunday. We stayed in a little Bed & Breakfast on the island that was built in the 1800’s. It was decorated to keep with that era–lots of Victorian era antiques, old creepy photographs…everything was pretty original looking. It kind of set that haunted house tone, which just made me a little bit uncomfortable even though I’m not really a believer in the supernatural. Maybe it was the decor that made me feel more inclined to believe it was haunted, I don’t know.
Anyways, while I was there I just had a sort of weird feeling the whole time where I didn’t really feel comfortable being alone in the room. I actually made Darling Husband go with me to the bathroom at one point because I was freaked out (we had a shared bathroom down the hall that we were sharing with the other couple that went with us). Nothing happened the first night and we went to bed around 11, so I thought eh I’m just being paranoid.
The second night, we stayed up until maybe 12:30 in the common area playing board games. When Darling Husband and I went upstairs to the room we were staying in we heard a weird noise coming from inside the room. It had been locked the entire time we were gone. We had first left the room at around 7pm, so the room was completely empty from 7pm until 12:30am. When we opened the door, we realized the sound we were hearing was music coming from inside the room. The alarm clock/radio had been turned on…it was just an average plug-in clock/radio that you would’ve maybe bought 10-15 years ago, and we had not touched it the entire time we were there. It was playing some song that basically was just repeating the phrase “God is with us” over and over again. Now, my first reaction was that maybe someone staying previously had set an alarm (for midnight? Weird…but you never know I guess). I thought that was kind of strange since it hadn’t gone off the night before, and it wasn’t a sophisticated enough alarm to be set for specific days. So when I went to turn off the alarm, I realized the alarm wasn’t set at all. The radio had actually been turned on with a sliding switch that someone had slid from “Off” to “Music” (so it wasn’t even like it could’ve been an old electronic glitch).
I ended up just turning it off. I was totally creeped out. Darling Husband insisted he hadn’t snuck up to the room and turned it on (which I believe because I’m pretty sure I held onto the key the whole night). The inn keepers and staff were all already done working for the day by time we left for dinner, so no one should’ve been in the room. Also, after that, the next morning I noticed whenever I was in the room alone I kept smelling a burning odor…like the smell when you leave a curling iron on. If anyone else was in the room, the smell was gone. It was so strong, I actually had to check my curling iron even though it had been completely unplugged since the night before (and wasn’t hot).
So…just wanted to share that story since it completely creeped me out. Any reasonable explanations? Also, since it’s always fun…anyone else have any weird/haunted stories to share?

Yeah I think that’s creepy! Can’t say for sure but yeah, maybe it was haunted. Hope you were able to sleep!
I have two stories that come to mind: when I first moved to Los Angeles I stayed with my godfather and his family. It was an older house that they had expanded and renovated, and located in very quiet, tree-lined neighborhood (not the “typical” LA house). My room was at the far end of the house and I always had a slightly creepy feeling when I was back there alone. I usually had the window slightly open which was right behind my head. One night I woke up because it sounded as if something heavy was being dragged across the floor right outside the window. Like “drag sound” – pause – “drag sound” – pause. I peeked out but couldn’t see anything and the sound stopped.
Another one was from childhood. I was sleeping over at a friend’s house and we had the place to ourselves because her parents were out of town for the weekend. We fell asleep in the living room upstairs and I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of the main entrance door downstairs opening and closing. I heard footsteps and what sounded like coats being taken off and hung up, etc. I thought “oh, her parents must have come back after all!”. Then I hear footsteps coming up the stairs and the distinctive sound of jeans rubbing from walking….they get louder and louder until they’re right behind me. I turn around to say “hi” and….nothing. I was so sure that they were home and behind me, but no one was there, no additional sounds, nada. Needless to say I was a little freaked out haha.

lula0508 : Sorry you were creeped out, I would totally be researching Mackinac Island and the background re the B & B etc. I find this stuff fascinating.
While it IS possible of course that it’s a simple clock radio malfunction. Or maybe the staff there like to play little harmless pranks to help keep the haunted legend going…..but wouldn’t rule out the paranormal either.
I wouldn’t want to encounter some full-on demon like Katie in the Paranormal Activities, with the possessing and being dragged across the floor and all that….but some garden variety ghosts and hauntings or harmless poltergeists would be soooo intriguing

I LOVE Mackinac Island! I would’ve just thought they turned music on since a lot of places do that at turn down, but sounds like nobody was around to do that. Whenever I’ve had a feeling of a place being haunted…like I just feel a little weird like I’m not alone, it’s generally turned out to be a place that was supposedly haunted. You may have just creeped yourself out, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was haunted. Mackinac is old. Such an awesome place though! Sounds like it was a nice enough ghost anyway 😉

slomotion : Hahaha that was my thought…like, just my luck, we’re babymoonin’ in Mackinac and my baby’s going to get possessed by some damn demon and I’ll end up with Rosemary’s Baby or Damien or something like that lol
RobbieAndJuliahaha : I did a quick google search when we got back, basically just the name of the B&B and “haunted” I didn’t find much…I mean, Mackinac is kind of known for ghost tours so it pulled back lots of different types of things. I did find one ghost enthusiast type site that mentioned that locals had told him the B&B was haunted, but he didn’t get the opportunity to spend the night. Darling Husband was going to ask the owner & innkeeper at breakfast, but I was like, eh…nah…they probably get that crap all the time and are sick of crazy people thinking their inn is haunted.

are you sure no staff was in your room that could have accidentally done it?

ajillity81 : Pretty certain. I actually remembered something else about the timeline. I stopped back in our room after dinner by myself…so that would’ve been between 9 and 9:30pm to change out of my dinner clothes into comfortable clothes. At that point the radio was definitely not turned on…so if it was the staff, they would’ve had to go in there between 9:30pm and 12:30am. I was inside the B&B (downstairs in the dining room, our room was upstairs in a 2 story old house) that entire time, and didn’t see any staff between those hours.
