Background: Darling Husband is a construction engineer and huge Lord of the Rings fan. We’ve just built our first home, but he really wants to engineer and build us a hobbit hole in a 2-3 years. He’s already looking into requirements and where he could do it.
It would be something like this: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2039719/Simon-Dale-How-I-built-hobbit-house-Wales-just-3-000.html (although probably not all salvaged like theirs)
I’d be totally cool with living in a hobbit hole, but I’m afraid that it might piss people off if they want to live in a normal neighbourhood and then we plop this weird house in the middle of it.
Would you have a problem with neighbours doing this?

Honestly, I really wouldn’t care…but we are from London, and some people there are….touchy 😛

I would think there are restrictions on what kind of establishment can be built on land (that’s how it works here, anyway.. all plans need to be approved by the township and something like this definitely wouldn’t be).
Not really my cup of tea, pretty cool little place though.
ETA- Just noticed you’re from London.. I’m in Ontario too and I highly highly doubt you’d get approval to build that.

As long as your trash doesn’t blow into my yard and your dogs don’t keep me up all night, live in whatever you want. We want a castle. With a moat. 🙂

Yes, it would piss me off and depending on the neighborhood could potentially dramatically decrease home values in the area.

I love it. I thought of it more as something in the woods than in a neighborhood, but I would love it either way and I want one too 🙂
Is there any problem with just living further out of town where I am sure you could get approved?

@sara_tiara: lol. Yeah, London homeowners are crazy sometimes. That’s what I’m worried about. I’m thinking we may have to build outside of town, and I hate living rural (we’re current;y outside of London and it takes 20 min just to get to a grocery store or a Walmart).

@bunnymama: I would LOVE it if my neighbors did this! Unfortunately, I live in a community with an HOA, so this probably will never happen for me.

ok so I’m trying to get this all … you HAVE a normal house on the property?
so you’re going to ADD this in your backyard?

@bunnymama: when i read it i was like no way he dug that out with no experience but he just built a cabin and covered it with dirt and moss. so i’ll buy what theyre selling
I voted cool

I’d be annoyed as most likely it would negatively impact the value of my home.

Oh i missed the last two lines… no it would suck to have that in our neighborhood
Post # 14
Good point. I didn’t think about how it would impact other people’s value, just that people might find it weird/ugly. I can totally understand people not liking it for that reason.

@bunnymama: nice idea if that’s your dream home, but not at all suitable for a suburban area where there are neighbors. Why not out in a rural area?
As a homeowner who chooses to live in a HOA governed suburban area, I’d be beyond honked if, by some miracle, someone obtained the zoning and licensing to build a home like this near mine.
But, if it were away from the City, and in the area it seems best suited for, I’d love to visit for tea and admire your adjoining gardens 😉

I think it looks cool, but would probably affect property value, and that would really tick people off imho.
