Haha, I’d be calling the cops.

@twentyeleven: Does your city/town have a noise ordinance? If so, whatever time it kicks in would be the time I’d ask them to tone it down and then if necessary, call the police. Where I live, it’s 11pm so they’d have been shut down long ago. Can you call your neighbor or go knock on the door? That is the kinder and gentler way to do it IMO.

Good luck!

i would be fine with anything as long as I got advanced notice (like a week). That way I could make plans to be away or at least would know it was going to be a loud night so I wouldn’t be so annoyed.

I would wait it out for tonight and tomorrow go over with a plate of baked goods and kindly request that they let you know in advance when their next gathering will be.

Girl this is an every day/night occurance in our apt. Our neighbors keep their kids up at all hours of the day. I know when my neighbor is mad because he will play country music so loud I can hear the words clear as day. I’ve said something to him, I’ve even gone down at 20 til 5 in the morning because we couldn’t sleep because he lets their 2 year old kids play with their tv in their bedroom and it’s loud enough to hear the words. You can’t really do anything to get back at them because they most likely don’t care. I would try and say something to them a couple of times. If it doesn’t work then call the police. Good Luck.

I’d be ticked already. At the very least invite me or drop off a bribe because you’ll be keeping me up all night. How rude!

11pm is usually the cut off for noise restrictions. varies by municipality.

It is annoying and I would be mad too but I wouldn’t call the cops if this is the first time they have done it. They definitely should have given you advance notice but I think at this stage the best you can do is wait it out or go and knock on their door and explain that you can hear them.

However… if this then happens again – call the cops asap!

I’d be really pissed. I think having a cup of tea and taking a warm bubble bath may help you unwind from work and ease you into sleep, even with the bass bass bass.

Sending hugs your way, hope tomorrow is better for you!

I would knock and say something like, “hey, the bass is shaking my walls. the volume isn’t a problem, but could you turn down the bass a bit?” personally.

Do you know your neighbors? are you on good/friendly terms with them? That helps a TON in situations like this!

this happened to me a couple weeks ago. i live in an apt in nyc though, so i’m actually surprised it hasn’t happened more! but it was really loud 80s karaoke–i couldn’t quite tell where it was coming from–either above me or in the building next door/across the air shaft. soooo loud! i just pouted and eventually fell asleep around 2am….boooo loud neighbors!

Next time just give them a friendly knock on the door and ask them to turn it down… We just had a holiday party last night and we were a bit loud. Embarassed I did end the party at 11:30 though, so hopefully they weren’t too pissed. It’s the only party we’ve had since we moved in. I’d hope that if my neighbors were peeved at the noise they would ask us to keep quiet first before sending the cops out on us!!
